The Student Worker will support research and development activities within the SOEC and Metal Hydride project. The role focuses on assisting with metal hydride compact development, electrochemical testing, technical documentation, and research analysis. The position contributes to experimental execution, data evaluation, and coordination activities that support ongoing public-funded research projects. The student will work closely with engineers and researchers while gaining hands-on experience in advanced energy and materials technologies. A strong focus on delivering high-quality, customer-cantered solutions is essential, while adhering to Johnson Electric’s Environmental, Health & Safety, Quality, and Human Resources policies. Maintaining safe and efficient work practices is critical.

Your responsibilities will be to:

  • Support the development and fabrication of metal hydride compacts, including screening and assisting with powder metal compaction processes

  • Conduct literature reviews, summarize scientific findings, and contribute to technical reports and project presentations

  • Conduct and monitor SOEC measurements under defined operating conditions, including temperature, atmosphere, and current load requirements

  • Develop and document test procedures and workflows covering sample preparation, mounting, measurement sequences, data acquisition, validation, shutdown, and safety procedures

  • Perform systematic data collection, data cleaning, and preliminary analysis to support research activities and project objectives

  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders and external suppliers regarding test stand components, measurement hardware, furnace systems, and power electronics interfaces

Our requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in or pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Material Engineering, or a related technical discipline

  • Previous research, laboratory, or industrial experience is beneficial but not required

  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering, materials science, hydrogen technologies, electrochemistry, solid oxide systems, or related technical fields

  • Ability to support electrochemical testing activities and experimental research projects

  • Strong literature research, scientific writing, and technical documentation skills

  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and present technical data in a structured manner

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications

  • Familiarity with powder metal technologies and electrochemical testing methods is advantageous

  • Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently on technical assignments

  • Effective teamwork and coordination skills when working with researchers, suppliers, and project stakeholders

  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Fluent German communication skills, both written and verbal
