Java Software Engineer

As a Java Software Engineer, you will join our BU Java where we offer a wide range of services – from consultancy assignments at our clients to internal projects managed by us. We are experts in application development – from scope to support. We approach our projects with a pragmatic approach and help our clients achieve their goals. We have already done this for clients such as Nike, Port of Antwerp, DPG Media, Yonderland, KBC, Ravago, Dexis Belgium, De Lijn, …

Our clients can be divided into 2 major regions: Antwerp/Brussels/Limburg/Flemish Brabant and East Flanders/West Flanders/Brussels. This means you can choose in which of the 2 regions you prefer to work. We ensure a good work-life balance, where you can count on 2 to 3 days of remote work.

A week in the life of…

Get rid of the boring task package. We let our colleague Niko speak and give an insight into his workweek. Niko is a Java (Fullstack) Software Engineer and has been with us since 2022.

• Monday, our bi-weekly sprint is over so we have a retrospective on the agenda. We look back on the past sprint and review what went well and what did not. We discuss the planning for the next sprint and decide on which tickets to include. In between, I check the JUVO emails and confirm my attendance for our team building!
• Tuesday I start at 7:00 am with my first ticket of the day. At 09:15 we have our daily standup (DSU). We briefly go over who has done what – this way we keep an overview of the sprint. The rest of the day I focus on developing new features in the Backend.
• Wednesday I start a bit later. In the morning, I pair-program with another colleague. In between, we have a refinement meeting to clarify and estimate the work for future sprints. I am working from home today, so we take a break during the day and go for a walk with the dog. In the afternoon, we have a complex problem to unravel, so we mob with our entire team.
• Thursday I work from our JUVO office in Herentals. I start on a ticket where my focus is on the Frontend. In between, a few ad-hoc meetings with stakeholders to discuss specific issues. At 4:00 pm, I have a 1-2-1 with my technical coach at JUVO. My AWS certificate is in, so we shape my growth trajectory for the upcoming period.
• Friday I work from the client’s office. Today we have an architects‘ meeting to clarify issues regarding difficult & complex projects. The rest of the day, I work on finishing ongoing tasks and start preparing for next week.

At JUVO, we use a Tech radar. Not only do we map our expertise, but we also stay relevant by continuously reviewing and evaluating our stack with the new trends in the market.

These are the skills we are currently looking for in potential candidates:

• You have at least 5 years of experience as a Java (Fullstack or Backend) Software Engineer.
• If you want to work as a Fullstack Developer, Frontend expertise is required, preferably in Angular and/or React.
• Cloud skills, preferably AWS or Azure/GCP.
• Strong communication skills in Dutch & English (French is a plus).
• Along with Dutch, you speak English fluently. A bit of French is a nice bonus but not mandatory.
• A healthy work-life balance with the possibility of hybrid work.
• You work as a consultant on exciting projects (at our clients or in-house) where you can experience different sectors & tech stacks.
