Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Ballast Regulator Operator to join our traveling track maintenance and surfacing gang. This role is responsible for safely and efficiently operating a ballast regulator to shape, distribute, and dress ballast during track maintenance, resurfacing, and construction projects. This position requires extensive travel to job sites across the region and a willingness to work extended hours, including nights and weekends, as project schedules demand.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate a ballast regulator to move, shape, and distribute ballast along the track profile before and after surfacing operations
- Work closely with tamper operators, surfacing crews, and foremen to maintain proper track geometry and ballast section
- Perform pre-shift and post-shift inspections of equipment; report mechanical issues promptly
- Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on the ballast regulator
- Follow all railroad and company safety procedures, including lockout/tagout and on-track safety protocols
- Coordinate with track foremen and roadmasters regarding daily work plans and production goals
- Travel to various job sites as part of a traveling gang, often staying in company-provided lodging during work weeks
- Work efficiently within scheduled track outages/windows to maximize productivity
- Maintain accurate daily production and equipment reports
- Assist with other track maintenance tasks as needed when not operating equipment
Qualifications
- Prior experience operating a ballast regulator or similar heavy railroad maintenance equipment strongly preferred
- Working knowledge of track structure, ballast profiles, and surfacing operations
- Ability to travel extensively, including overnight stays away from home for extended periods (weekly or bi-weekly travel schedules)
- Willingness and ability to work 40+ hours per week, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays as project demands require
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to perform basic equipment maintenance/troubleshootingli>
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Must pass pre-employment drug screening, background check, and safety training certification
- Valid driver's license required; CDL a plus
