KIT combines fundamental research at the methodic level with engineering applications in the field of process simulation. The focus is on the systematic transition from the simulation of individual process steps to the simulation of complete processes, enabling a holistic and systemic representation of entire production chains in process engineering. The objective is to develop new methods for particle technology that facilitate rapid and efficient process design and optimization. Against this background, we are filling the Tenure-Track Professorship (W1) in Process Simulation (f/m/d), which is expected to make a visible contribution to the sustainable transformation of industrial processes.
Your Tasks
Research
- You will conduct research in the field of process simulation, ranging from numerical foundations and mechanistic and hybrid modeling approaches to the multiscale representation of processes and process value chains in particle technology.
- You will develop and integrate methods and concepts from artificial intelligence, thereby creating links between product design, process development, and simulation.
- Through simulation-based research, you will investigate and develop strategies for transferring processes to the industrial scale (scale-up) and incorporate methods for techno-economic assessment.
- You will address data quality, data integration, and data management for process simulation.
Teaching
- You will make a significant contribution to research-oriented teaching in both fundamental and application-oriented courses, with a focus on process simulation and computational methods.
- You will develop topic-specific courses for the study programs Chemical and Process Engineering (B.Sc./M.Sc.), Computational Modeling in Engineering (M.Sc.), and Bioengineering (B.Sc./M.Sc.) at the KIT Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, and supervise student projects.
- The position involves a teaching load of 4 hours per week; following a positive evaluation, this increases to 6 hours per week.
Knowledge Transfer and Innovation
- You will contribute to the development of new software tools.
- You will establish contacts with regional and supra-regional industrial partners and contribute to continuing education and professional training programs for industry.
Your Profile
- You have an outstanding scientific qualification in process systems engineering, chemical engineering, bioengineering, or a closely related discipline with a clear connection to process simulation.
- You have a clearly identifiable research profile in process simulation, particularly in the modeling of unit operations, processes, and process chains in particle technology, ideally with a focus on data-driven and AI-based approaches.
- You have a strong track record of scientific achievements (e.g., publications) and demonstrate clear potential for further development in both research and teaching.
- You are open to interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly at the interfaces between chemical engineering, mathematics, and the natural sciences.
- Ideally, you have gained initial experience in teaching and student supervision, or demonstrate a strong motivation to further develop your teaching and pedagogical skills.
- You are willing to acquire external research funding and to promote the transfer of research results into practical applications and industry.
- You demonstrate strong teamwork and communication skills, as well as a commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Employment is subject to Art. 14, par. (2) of the KIT Act in conjunction with Art. 51 LHG Baden-Württemberg (Act of Baden-Württemberg on Universities and Colleges) as well as the Quality Assurance Concept for Junior Professorships and Tenure-TrackProfessorships at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

Salary
Salary is determined by the statutory provisions of the state of Baden-Württemberg and corresponds to the basic salary of pay grade W1 (civil service pay scale). In addition, allowances may be awarded. Where applicable, a family allowance is paid in accordance with civil service regulations.
Contract Duration
The position is for six years, either as a fixed-term civil service appointment (Beamtenverhältnis auf Zeit) or as an employment contract; an interim evaluation will take place before the end of the third year.
The evaluation process and the general evaluation criteria follow the Quality assurance concept for junior professorships and tenure-track professorships at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Of particular importance for the midterm and final evaluations are the following discipline-specific priorities:
- Independent scientific contributions to process simulation in particle technology, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and the successful acquisition of external funding.
- International visibility of the research group in its field.
- Successful training of students, particularly through bachelor’s and master’s theses.
- Regular participation in KIT’s teaching evaluation.
- Participation in training programs on university teaching methods.
- Ability to teach undergraduate courses in German by the end of the evaluation period.
