Associate Professor in Digital Decision Making
The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) invites applications for a Associate Professor in Digital Decision Making at the Institute of Information Systems and Networking (ISIN) within the Department of Innovative Technologies (DTI) located in the new USI-SUPSI Campus in Lugano-Viganello. Degree of employment 100% with a permanent contract starting on 1st July 2025, or date to be agreed upon.
At ISIN, we are engaged in a broad spectrum of fields within Computer Science, Data Science, and Engineering. One of our focus points is the digitalisation of products, services, processes, and systems in order to support companies in the implementation of disruptive and radical innovation technologies and methodologies. The position offered in this call aims at strengthening the strategic line of the institute in the area of Digital Decision Making (DDM for short).
The Professor will focus on understanding and modelling the processes of decision making to achieve harmonious human-system-computer collaborations. The professor will investigate the conception, design, development, deployment, and regulation of complex information and communications technologies (ICT) systems, thus promoting changes with the potential to significantly affect organizations and societies in general. The position involves working with technologies and methodologies centred on leveraging data and information for facilitating data-driven decision making, thus achieving optimal human-machine cooperation for given (business) processes.
The research activities will focus on collecting, analysing, and modelling data about people, organizations, and machines such as user performances for given tasks or systems generated data from financial markets. The research encompasses collecting, storing, filtering, segmenting, and augmenting information finalized to measure, model, and interpret people and systems actions. The outcomes of the research activities include (i) devising techniques that support and facilitate the conduction of specific human driven tasks or (ii) designing systems that autonomously act on behalf of their users.
Duties and Responsibilities
Research
- He/she is a researcher with an excellent academic profile, capable of combining major applied and fundamental research projects in collaboration with other universities and leading innovation companies. With an up-to-date knowledge of the state of the art, he/she develops innovative approaches and business, design, and technological solutions.
- The Professor transfers research results to industry through prototypes and design-driven methodologies. In his/hers everyday work, the researcher applies theoretical concepts and operational technologies, making relevant scientific contributions to the area of DDM.
- He/she acquires, coordinates, and manages applied and fundamental research projects, taking care of identifying appropriate funding sources and building robust and relevant partnerships, moving easily across the European network in the field of data science research.
- He/she identifies scientifically relevant research objectives and contributes to the dissemination and exploitation of the research output of the institute.
- He/she is active in scientific and academic communities within the area of research of this position as well as engaged in cross- and multidisciplinary research.
Teaching
- He/she makes significant contributions to basic and continuing education, as well as takes an active role in monitoring the processes of educational delivery.
- He/she actively contributes to the continuous evolution of the teaching activities, both in terms of competences in line with the evolving innovations in the field of expertise and in terms of teaching methodologies.
- He/she is engaged with his/her research group and is actively involved in designing new curriculums and updating the existing ones.
- He/she engages in meaningful teamwork aimed at fostering the growth of junior profiles, taking care of their skill development and quality of work in terms of training and research activities.
- He/she promotes collaboration among faculty, researchers, and scientific collaborators within his/her area of expertise and facilitates multidisciplinary research projects.
- He/she maintains strong relationships with scientific and industrial partners.
- He/she coordinates and manages the scientific, financial, and administrative aspects of research and educational projects.
Visibility
- He/she promotes national and international collaborations in the research area of DDM.
- He/she actively promotes the Institute nationally and internationally through participation in working groups and international conferences.
- He/she contributes actively to the dissemination of his/her research by engaging in cross-disciplinary activities as well as by interacting with policymakers and non-scientific audiences.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in a related area (e.g.: Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering)
- At least ten years of research experience in related areas of research
- Mature scientist demonstrated by his/her (i) impact factor, (ii) single author publications, (iii) publications outside his/her core domain of research, (iv) organization of international, scientific workshops and (v) experience in editing special issues of scientific journals.
- Proven ability to attract external funds, establish a solid relationship between industry and academia, and conduct multidisciplinary research.
- Ability to take a leading role in large collaborations and international consortiums.
- Strong teaching track record with positive student feedback
- Experience with thesis supervision at PhD/master/bachelor level
- Experience in organizing and teaching scientific educational events such as summer schools
- Experience in academic curriculum development at the level of both courses and entire programs
- Demonstrated ability to develop dissemination materials for general public as well as for university courses
- Excellent command of the Italian language.
- Excellent proficiency, C2, in written and spoken English.
- Capable of teaching and conducting everyday business in Italian and English
- Proficient in at least two programming languages including Python and Java
Preferred
- Some working history from industry in verticals such as Finance, Telecommunication, eCommerce, Media, etc.
- Experience with funding acquisition in Switzerland, especially with Innosuisse projects
- Experience with funding acquisition in Europe, especially within Horizon 2020
- Active in networks for acquiring research funding, demonstrated ambition and experience in working closely with companies and government agencies
- Demonstrated ability of conducting open science research including the creation of public datasets
- A Teaching Qualification obtained in Europe
- Proficiency in either French or German
