Clinical Toxicologist with Expertise in Poisoning Data (f/m/d)

The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has an immediate vacancy in the Department Exposure:

The BfR independently prepares expert opinions and statements on issues of food, feed and chemical safety and consumer health protection in Germany on the basis of internationally recognised scientific evaluation criteria. It advises the Federal Government and other institutions and interest groups in these areas. The BfR thus makes an important contribution to the protection of human health.

The work takes place in the “National Registry of Poisonings” Unit. You can find further information on the Unit’s remit here on our homepage.

Tasks

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) has been tasked with establishing a National Poisoning Register (NVR) through the Fourth Amendment to the Chemicals Act on 23 November 2023. The aim of the NVR is to centralise and harmonise the collection, storage, and analysis of poisoning data across Germany. This initiative will contribute to enhanced toxicovigilance, close existing gaps in national poisoning assessments, support health risk evaluations, and improve public health safety and security by making the management of poisoning cases more effective.

A newly established Unit at the BfR is responsible for implementing the NVR and the associated requirements of the amended Chemicals Act. To support this task, we have developed a strategy that divides the work into several key areas. We are a motivated and dynamic team with a wide range of skills, working together to develop processes and drive implementation. To support our mission, we are looking for a colleague with expertise in clinical toxicology and the management of toxicological data. Specific duties include:

Clinical Toxicology:

  • Health assessment of poisoning cases involving hazardous substances and products
  • Assessment of poisoning incidents in Germany, including reporting and advising the Federal Government and other relevant authorities
  • Providing expert knowledge for the evaluation of poisoning incidents in Germany, based on NVR data
  • Participation in and advisory roles within national and international committees

Data and IT Management:

  • Significant involvement in the development and management of the NVR’s data infrastructure, including database development, data mining, and software testing
  • Development of concepts for the statistical evaluation of poisoning data, trend identification, and early warning signal detection
  • Collaboration with IT teams to develop and test software solutions for NVR data management

Project Management:

  • Oversight of clinical-toxicological projects within the NVR strategy and ensuring the international integration of clinical data
  • Continuous improvement of workflows, particularly in software architecture and database development

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Close cooperation with other areas of the NVR to coordinate clinical toxicology and data management
  • Promoting clear and effective communication between different areas to support health-related decisions

National and International Coordination:

  • Support collaboration with national and international poisoning data registers and standardisation of data collection and reporting

Knowledge Exchange and Training:

  • Training team members in data management techniques and software tools
  • Development of initiatives that link clinical toxicology and data science

Your profile

  • Completed University degree (Master’s degree, diploma or comparable university degree) in clinical toxicology, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Medicine or a comparable field
  • Several years of professional experience in the field of clinical toxicology, ideally in the processing of poisoning cases involving hazardous substances and products
  • In-depth knowledge of database development, data analysis, and statistical evaluation
  • Experience in project management and the development and implementation of complex data management solutions
  • Excellent knowledge of IT systems and software architecture in the context of toxicological data
  • Good knowledge of written and spoken German (at least B2 level) or willingness to acquire this in the near future
  • Good knowledge of written and spoken English
