University Professor for the subject area of Functional materials pursuant to § 98 of the Universities Act At the Department of Materials Science, a permanent university professorship (m/f/d) under private law at Montanuniversität Leoben will be filled from 01.10.2027. The chair focuses on bottom‑up synthesis and characterization of functional inorganic materials and is embedded in the Smart Materials field with bridges to Sustainable Processes and Advanced Resources. Methods for generating new functional materials are central to the department’s research strategy.
Key Responsibilities Lead the Chair of Functional Materials, with its established research areas “Advanced Surface Engineering”, “Materials for Microelectronics”, “Advanced Micro‑and Nanostructure Characterization” and “Materials Testing under Extreme Conditions”. The role includes:
Advancing research on innovative functional materials, linking controlled atomistic structure to functional properties.
Securing third‑party funding and developing joint research projects with other chairs and research institutions.
Teaching at the bachelor, master and PhD levels in subjects such as vacuum and thin‑film technology, microelectronics, and related areas, with instruction in English and German.
Acting as a research and teaching leader, fostering collaboration across the university and advising students and staff.
Qualifications and Experience Applicants must hold a doctorate and habilitation (or equivalent) in a relevant field. Desired profile includes:
Extensive teaching and research experience with demonstrated didactic skills.
Leadership and teamwork abilities, and willingness to undertake organisational and administrative responsibilities.
Experience in applying engineering knowledge to industry‑related problems.
Salary and Benefits The position is classified in group A1 of the university collective agreement. Full‑time monthly salary is € 6,713.30 (14 months per year). Final remuneration and employment terms will be negotiated upon appointment.
