• Position Overview

The Pulaar Telephone Interpreter handles calls on demand, rendering communication between Pulaar and English speakers across various industries: Healthcare, Government, Insurance, Finance, Utilities, Travel & Hospitality, General Business, Law Enforcement, Court, and 911.

The interpreter processes information quickly, concisely and recognizes sensitive cultural differences.

Professional, courteous at all times, using appropriate terminology and understanding common industry procedures.

Sessions may involve simple or complex, technical or non-technical subjects.

This remote position requires a quiet and secure home office environment.

Essential Job Functions

• Respond to interpreting sessions promptly, conducting interpretation in a friendly and professional manner.
• Render accurate concepts and meanings per established interpretation protocol, avoiding omissions or additions.
• Speak clearly in both languages with proper pronunciation, enunciation and polite expressions.
• Maintain a professional demeanor throughout all sessions.
• Remain calm during sessions if a primary speaker is incoherent, upset, or in emergency situations such as 911 calls.
• Maintain punctuality and availability during work hours.
• Follow client instructions, complying with protocol and ensuring client expectations are met while interacting with the Limited English-speaking Person (LEP) only with client permission.
• Understand protocol and terminology for Medical, Insurance, Finance, and Law.
• Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and work within a diverse environment.
• Some calls may be highly emotional and/or stressful; interpreter may need to remain on a call for extended periods without breaks.

Qualifications

• Fluency in Pulaar and English and skill in associated cultural dynamics.
• Ability to provide cultural competency and assess regional/accent differences.
• Excellent listening, retention and note-taking skills for high accuracy.
• Ability to remain neutral, objective and detached during sensitive subjects.
• Education or experience in language-related fields such as teaching, language assessment, translation or interpretation preferred.
• Adaptability to LLS technology enhancements.
• At least 18 years of age.
• Legal authorization to work in Canada. (For US applicants, appropriate work authorization that does not require future sponsorship.)
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Current employment by an LLS client or affiliated business may disqualify.
• Ability to read and write the requested languages – highly preferred.

Background checks and/or drug screening may be required based on location.

Technical Requirements

Dedicated personal device for business purposes

• Desktop or laptop with Windows, Mac OS or Chrome OS.
• Tablet (i Pad OS or Android) acceptable.
• Smartphone (i OS or Android) acceptable.
• Restricted brands: Kaspersky products, Huawei hardware.
• High-speed Internet: download ≥5 Mbps, upload ≥3 Mbps, ping ≤300 ms, jitter ≤30 ms.
• Quiet, noise-free workspace.

Physical Requirements

• Operate keyboard and mouse, remain stationary in front of computer for majority of day.
• Operate company software and systems.
• Sufficient manual dexterity to type or write.
• Able to lift up to 26 lbs.
• May be exposed to moderate noise levels.
