The Mission & Role

Lateration's Mission:Our technologies help police and military forces make better decisions under pressure and operate more effectively in complex situations. Lateration develops next-generation systems that combine field sensors, secure communications, and intelligent data processing to provide reliable operational awareness in modern defense environments.

Your Mission: You push our UWB technology forward at the intersection of RF physics, signal processing, and hardware. You get to the bottom of difficult signal and hardware problems, develop new methods, and validate them through real-world measurements until they deliver measurable improvements. As a subject-matter expert, you share your knowledge with the team and help shape the long-term evolution of our systems.

What You Will Do

  • Advanced UWB System Development: Design, develop, and optimize UWB systems at the intersection of RF hardware, signal processing, and embedded technology. Explore the physical and technical limits of UWB and develop innovative approaches to overcome them.
  • RF Physics & Signal Processing: Investigate complex signal behavior, including phase characteristics, multipath propagation, interference, timing, and channel effects. Develop algorithms and techniques that improve system performance, precision, range, and robustness.
  • Precision Measurement & Algorithm Development: Develop and validate advanced ranging, positioning, calibration, and signal-processing methods. Combine mathematical models, simulations, and real-world measurements to understand and improve system behavior.
  • Hardware Development & Experimental Validation: Bring new RF boards and modules into operation. Analyze signal integrity, antenna effects, timing behavior, and hardware limitations using professional measurement equipment. Turn theoretical insights into measurable improvements.
  • Technical Innovation & Ownership: Take responsibility for challenging technical problems from initial investigation through experimental validation. Question established approaches, develop new concepts, and contribute directly to our long-term technology development.
  • Collaboration Across Disciplines: Work closely with experts in RF engineering, embedded systems, firmware, and algorithms. Share knowledge, challenge ideas constructively, and help build a team that values technical excellence over hierarchy.

Your first 5 months – What You’ll Be Proud to Have Achieved

  • You have gained a deep understanding of our UWB technology and identified opportunities to push its performance beyond existing capabilities.
  • You have independently developed, implemented, or validated at least one meaningful RF or signal-processing improvement with measurable results.
  • You have tackled a challenging real-world signal or hardware problem and demonstrated a working solution.
  • You have contributed new ideas, experimental methods, or technical approaches that influence our future development.
  • You have become a trusted technical contributor whose expertise helps shape our UWB technology.

Who We Are Looking For

  • Deep Technical Understanding: You have substantial experience in UWB, RF engineering, wireless communication, radar, or advanced signal processing. More importantly, you understand the underlying physics and can reason from first principles rather than relying exclusively on existing implementations.
  • Signal Processing & Algorithms: You have experience with topics such as phase measurements, time-of-flight estimation, channel estimation, multipath mitigation, synchronization, calibration, or high-precision positioning.
  • Practical Engineering Skills: You are comfortable working with real hardware, conducting experiments, interpreting measurement data, and using equipment such as oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and vector network analyzers.
  • Independent Thinking: You are not satisfied with the answer "that's how it has always been done." You enjoy investigating difficult problems, questioning assumptions, and developing solutions that others may not have considered.
  • Hands-on Mindset: You can move between theory, simulation, code, and hardware. You enjoy seeing your ideas work in practice and understand the difference between a promising simulation and a robust real-world system.
  • Ownership & Curiosity: You take initiative, work independently, and are motivated by technical challenges. You care about the quality of your work and are willing to go deep when a problem demands it.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with UWB chipsets and low-level RF or firmware development
  • Knowledge of PHY-layer architectures, baseband processing, or digital signal processing
  • Experience with basic antenna design or RF front ends
  • Familiarity with Python, C/C++
  • Experience developing novel algorithms or experimental RF systems
  • Research experience, scientific publications, or patents in relevant technical fields

Clearance

Due to the nature of our work, you must be eligible for a German security clearance (SÜ2/Ü2). Generally, this requires German citizenship or long-term residency within EU/NATO countries.

Why Join Us?

  • Mission with Real Impact: Your technical decisions directly shape the systems that protect police and military personnel in the field.

  • Operational Scope: You own the technical direction of a project end-to-end — from architecture decisions to final delivery — with the authority to sign off on what gets built.

  • Cross-Functional Exposure: You work closely with engineers, other Technical Leads, and external stakeholders, coordinating shared interfaces and dependencies across projects.

  • Strong Team & Collaboration: Hybrid working model, close collaboration and a team that values reliability over politics.

  • Flexible & Supportive Environment: Hybrid setup with flexible working hours, a strong team culture, and a shuttle service from Erding station to our HQ.

About us

Lateration builds technology where failure is not an option.

We don't develop theoretical concept studies: We build field-ready systems that give armed forces an unfair tactical advantage. As a VC-backed defense tech startup headquartered in Munich, we deliver the communications and positioning backbone for critical defense programs. Our hardware and software ecosystems secure operational superiority under intense electronic warfare conditions: from GPS-denied navigation and tactical mesh networks to precise friend-or-foe identification. We are scaling our team from 40 to 70+ specialists and are looking for people who take full ownership at the system level. We don't need seat-fillers — we need builders who solve complex problems and bring uncompromising functional maturity directly to the field.
