Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung

The Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung (IKZ) is a leading research institution in the area of science & technology as well as service & transfer of crystalline materials. Our goal is to enable solutions for urgent societal challenges (e.g. communication, artificial intelligence, climate protection, health etc.) by modern electronic & photonic technologies. The work covers the full spectrum from basic over applied research up to pre-industrial development and is performed in collaboration with national and international partners from university, academy and industry. The institute is part of Forschungsverbund Berlin and a member of the Leibniz Association. You can find more details on the institute webpage:

We are currently looking for a PhD student (m/f/d) for the topic:

“Temperature-dependent properties of visible solid-state laser gain materials”

The candidate will perform interdisciplinary research in the field of spectroscopic and laser characterization of gain materials for visible lasers based on Pr3+ and Tb3+ as the active ions. This work will include design and operation of laser resonators for experiments at temperatures from 10 K to room temperature. The aim is to identify mechanisms currently limiting the efficiency of visibly emitting lasers and circumvent them by the choice of improved host materials and/or operation at moderately cold temperatures. Depending on the profile of the candidate this work may also involve aspects of crystal growth. The research will be performed in the research group “Center for Laser-Materials” in close collaboration with the crystal growth departments at IKZ. We offer state-of-the-art equipped laboratories, a dedicated team and a productive research environment with a total of currently more than 25 other PhD students at our institute.

Your tasks

  • Temperature-dependent laser characterization of visible solid-state lasers
  • Temperature- and time-dependent spectroscopy of rare-earth doped laser crystals
  • Participation in the crystal growth of ion-doped gain materials
  • Publish your results in papers and at international conferences
  • Contribute to the research progress in the field of directly visible emitting laser

Your profile

  • MSc or equivalent degree in physical sciences or a physics related technical discipline
  • Hands-on lab experience in optical laboratories and a passion for solving technical challenges
  • Solid knowledge in laser physics and basic knowledge in optical characterization of solids
  • Excellent capability of scientific work and a passion for its thorough documentation and presentation
  • Good knowledge of the English language and the will to learn basics in German language
  • Ability for team-work in an international team
  • Basic knowledge in Python is an advantage

The position is limited to three years, an extension for another year is possible. Payment is according to TVöD Bund (75%) (Treaty for German public service) including the usual social benefits (30 vacation days in a 5-day week, flexible working hours). The IKZ is an equal opportunity employer and actively supports reconciliation of work and family life. There is equality for applicants of all genders. Qualified women are especially encouraged to apply. Among equally qualified applicants, preference will be given to disabled candidates.

For further information about the project please contact PD Dr. habil. Christian Kränkel, , phone +49 30 6392 3019.

Are you interested?
