About the Genetic Identification Service
The Genetic Identification Service (GIS) is a specialized unit within the Department of Forensic Medicine dedicated to supporting criminal investigations through DNA analysis. Its primary mission is to identify individuals based on biological evidence collected from crime scenes. The service generates genetic profiles from biological samples and compares them with those of suspects, victims, or DNA databases in order to establish associations or exclude individuals from investigations. It also plays a key role in the identification of human remains and deceased persons, as well as in legally mandated kinship and paternity analyses. Forensic genetics experts produce scientific reports that may be used as evidence in court proceedings and are frequently required to testify as expert witnesses. The work of the service is conducted according to rigorous scientific methodologies, strict quality assurance standards, and comprehensive confidentiality requirements regarding genetic data. By applying advanced DNA technologies to the field of justice, the service provides reliable, objective, and scientifically robust evidence that is often crucial in criminal investigations and judicial proceedings.
