Optical Engineer

Project description

The role of an Optical Engineer is to undertake, analyze and report experiments which will aid in the design of novel measurement systems. The candidate will work in a group of scientists, responsible for designing next-generation test technologies and metrology, including hardware, software, instruments and fixtures.

Responsibilities

1. Design experiments for optical systems under test.
2. Perform optical measurements and evaluate data to influence engineering designs.
3. Simulate the optical properties of the devices under test.
4. Support the design of novel metrology solutions and communicate design decisions and strategies to a cross-functional team.
5. Conduct benchmarking of optical systems to inform design of emerging technologies.
6. Collaborate across teams to create, define and document measurement metrics and specifications.

Skills
Must have

1. Technical background in optical engineering, lasers, microscopy or optical design.
2. Hands-on lab experience, especially in the alignment of optical benchtop setups.
3. Competence in data analysis, visualization, and algorithm development in Python or Matlab.
4. Advanced knowledge in design, construction and operation of optical lab experiments, data analysis and reporting.
5. Hands-on experience in optical design tools (Zemax, Code V or LightTrans) are a plus.
6. Ability to build strong relationships with team members, internal and external partners.
7. Ability to explore potential technologies and work with suppliers on prototype development.
8. Excellent English, Communication and presentation skills.
9. Self-motivated, independent, and dedicated.

Nice to have

1. Experience in instrumentation design.
2. University/research background.
3. Experience in automatization of optical benchtop setups.
4. Experience in calibration and validation of optical instruments.
5. Experience in camera design and associated technologies.
6. Previous experience building or managing an optical laboratory.
