Director of Special Education /p pbDEPT/SCHOOL: /b Special Services - 197 days /p pbPAY GRADE: /b Professional Pay Grade - 2 /p h3PRIMARY PURPOSE /h3 pTo provide support to special education teachers, distance or virtual instruction within the district. /p h3QUALIFICATIONS /h3 ul liMaster's degree in special education and/or a related field (preferred). /li liProper certification as required by the State Board for Educator Certification. /li liAdministrator or Mid-Management Certificate (preferred) /li /ul h3Special Knowledge/Skills /h3 ul liComprehensive knowledge of federal, state, and district special education regulations, policies, and procedures. /li liAbility to communicate special education concerns with parents, instructional staff, and school administrators. /li liStrong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. /li liDemonstrated experience in programming services for students with special needs. /li liDemonstrated ability to coordinate and provide staff development and other training activities. /li liExperience working with families and students coping with crisis and/or behavioral challenges. /li liExperience working with related service providers, mental health providers and community-based agencies. /li liProven record of success in communication skills, collaboration, and problem solving. /li liMinimum three years teaching experience in special education. /li liProven experience in leadership position (either district or campus level). /li liExperience in providing educational programming to students that has empirical support. /li liExperience working as a collaborative team member. /li /ul h3MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES /h3 h3Instructional Management /h3 ol liProvide leadership, coordinate and support In Class Support (ICS), Lifeskills, ABLE, PASS, and Self-Contained Behavior Programming. /li liProvide leadership and assistance in the development and implementation of methodologies that have empirical support for use with students. /li liServe as a resource in staffings and ARD meetings, clarifying district guidelines and providing expertise in state and federal law regarding students with high-needs. /li liAnalyze new laws and regulations pertaining to special education and provide training to. /li /ol h3School/Organizational Climate /h3 ol liEstablish communication networks among teachers, campuses, and administrators. /li liRespond appropriately to situations that could impair the teaching/learning process. /li liDeal sensitively and fairly with persons of diverse cultural backgrounds. /li liPerform other duties as assigned by the Asst. Director of Special Education. /li /ol h3School/Organizational Improvement /h3 ol liConduct informal observations and provide suggestions for improving the classroom and increasing achievement in a positive and supportive manner. /li liWork with appropriate staff to develop, maintain, and revise district procedural guidelines based on the Texas Education Agency's annual revision of the state monitoring document. /li liWork with appropriate staff to gather required data for specific indicators of the State Performance Plan (SPP). /li liTrain and support appropriate staff regarding STAAR and STAAR-ALT components of the statewide assessment program. /li /ol h3Training on Students with High-Needs /h3 ol liProvide training and support for district personnel regarding students with high-needs, including: Special education teachers, Special education paraprofessionals, Educational diagnosticians, LSSPs, and speech pathologists, General education teachers, and School administrators. /li /ol h3Student Management /h3 ol liDemonstrate support for the district's student management policies. /li liAssist campuses at providing best practice services for students with high-needs. /li liFacilitate the transfer process of students to programs within the district. /li /ol h3Professional Growth and Development /h3 ol liDevelop needed professional skills appropriate to job assignment. /li liDemonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible, and serve as a role model for. /li liGain expertise in newly developed policies and procedures in order to assist skill acquisition by. /li /ol h3School and Community Relations /h3 ol liArticulate the department's mission and goals to individual campuses and the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission. /li liEstablish and maintain open lines of communication by conducting conferences and meeting with parents, students, and staff concerning vital issues. /li /ol h3SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES /h3 pNone /p h3WORKING CONDITIONS /h3 h3Mental Demands /h3 pAbility to communicate effectively (verbal and written) with staff and students and community members; interpret district policy, procedures, and data; interpret state and federal laws regarding special education issues; coordinate district functions, maintain emotional control under stress. /p h3Physical Demands/Environmental Factors /h3 pFrequent district and occasional statewide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
