Position

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Marburg invites applications for a Professorship (Open Rank: W2 or W1 Tenure Track to W2) in Mathematical Optimization.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and lead a dedicated research group on optimization.
  • Actively participate in research networks and initiatives within the department and university.
  • Teach courses in discrete and continuous optimization.
  • Contribute to foundational education of bachelor’s, master’s and mathematics teacher education programmes, especially in Data Science, Business Mathematics and Business Informatics.

Qualifications

  • Outstanding track record in a modern applied field of mathematical optimization (e.g., optimization in machine learning, optimal control, PDE or ODE‑based optimisation, parameter identification).
  • Willingness to collaborate with other departments and build cross‑disciplinary connections.
  • Completed university degree in Mathematics, a doctorate and pedagogical aptitude.
  • Experience in initiating and securing externally funded projects (desired for tenure‑track; expected for W2).
  • For a W2 professorship: independent research and teaching profile, high‑ranking peer‑reviewed publications, successfully managed competitive projects, international visibility.

Tenure‑Track Specifics

  • Targeted at researchers early in their career; limited to 4 years post‑doc at the University.
  • Doctorate not earned at the University of Marburg (or if earned, at least two years of external research thereafter).
  • Upon successful evaluation, temporary civil servant for six years, then conversion to tenured W2.
  • Knowledge of German at C1 level required within two years of appointment.
