The Max-Born-Institute invites applications for Post-doctoral scientists (m/f/d) in the field of Precision measurements for fundamental tests of physics .
Job profile:
The Division of Precision Physics of MBI seeks the appointment of post-doctoral scientists in the field of precision spectroscopy with frequency combs. The project within the ERC Advanced Grant COMB is focused on the experimental development of a new concept of precision measurements with frequency combs. A revolutionary spectrometer will simultaneously achieve broad spectral coverage, high resolution, and extreme accuracy for precise studies of small molecules. A crucial part of the project involves the experimental development of a new measurement technique, its application to precise spectroscopy in small molecules, and the realization of new tests of quantum electrodynamics in molecules.
The post-doctoral scientists will develop a novel type of spectrometer and will in particular be involved in the frequency stabilization of the laser systems. Realizing the first spectroscopy experiments, evaluating the systematic effects induced by the instrument, and extension to different spectral regions will also be part of the tasks for the post-doctoral scientists who will work in a team around this multi-faceted project, together with scientists focused on other aspects of the project.
Requirements:
At the time they start the position, candidates should hold a PhD or doctoral degree in AMO experimental physics or in a related field. Candidates should have a passion for experimental work in laser and optical physics, excellent experimental skills, and a good theoretical background. Prior experience in at least one of the following fields is advantageous: precision measurements, frequency metrology, optical frequency combs, laser stabilization, Doppler-free spectroscopy of atoms and molecules, fundamental tests of physics.
The project is challenging and multi-disciplinary, thus it requires a large engagement. Candidates should be self-driven and have the ability to work independently as well as part of an international research group. They should be fluent in spoken and written English. The ability to write technical peer-reviewed publications, evidenced through a strong publication record, is essential.
Offer:
The positions are initially limited to 2 years, renewable. The payment is according to the German TVöD (Bund) salary scheme for scientists in public research institutions. The review of applications will start immediately and the positions are open until filled. Starting dates can be flexible in 2025.
If equally qualified, severely handicapped persons are given preference. MBI is an equal-opportunity employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply. MBI supports the reconcilability of family and working life and is certified by the audit workandfamily (audit berufundfamilie) as a family-friendly employer.
Please use the MBI online recruiting platform at to upload your application, which should include a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a motivation letter (explaining why you would like to join our group and indicating your desired starting date), transcripts of grades, and the contact details of 2 or 3 scientists who know you well and who are able to provide a recommendation letter. Even for pre-application inquiries, we strongly encourage potential applicants to always send a curriculum vitae and a list of publications, as this helps answer their questions.
