PhD students (m/f/d) | Global Biogeochemical Cycles

Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry, Jena

Type of Job: Microbiology & Ecology, Earth Sciences and Climate Research

Job Code: 21/2024

Job offer from December 02, 2024

In cooperation with the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry houses a unique and flexible research program that grants German and foreign students a broad selection of learning opportunities while still maintaining a research focus. The International Max Planck Research School for Global Biogeochemical Cycles (IMPRS-gBGC) offers a PhD program specializing in global biogeochemistry and related Earth system sciences. The overall research and teaching focuses on:

  • Improved understanding of biogeochemical processes with an emphasis on terrestrial ecosystems
  • Development of observational techniques to monitor and assess biogeochemical feedbacks in the Earth system
  • Theory and model development for improving the representation of biogeochemical processes in comprehensive Earth system models

We welcome applications from well-motivated and qualified students from all countries. Applicants should hold (or be about to receive) a Master of Science or equivalent degree in natural sciences. Proficiency in English is required since English is the official language of the program.

The Max Planck Society (MPS) strives for gender equality and diversity. The MPS aims to increase the proportion of women in areas where they are underrepresented. Women are therefore explicitly encouraged to apply. We welcome applications from all fields. The MPS has set itself the goal of employing more disabled people. Applications from severely disabled persons are expressly encouraged.

We offer scholarships for 4 years and full-time contracts for 3 years within an international and multidisciplinary working environment. The starting date is flexible.

How to apply

Application deadline for the fully funded PhD positions is January 13th, 2025 . Pre-interviews via web conference will be carried out, and promising candidates will be invited to take part in our selection symposium (March 12th – 13th, 2025).
