Role overview
This senior technical project manager role leads cross-functional teams working on autonomous vehicle and self-driving technology development. The position coordinates across engineering, software, product, finance, and operations groups to clarify ambiguous requirements, prioritize competing workstreams, assess risks, and track progress on complex R&D initiatives. It is a hybrid position based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with occasional travel to operational sites.
Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate cross-functional teams tackling hard technical problems in autonomous driving
- Break down complex challenges using data-driven analysis so engineers can solve them efficiently
- Translate fuzzy requirements into clear, prioritized project plans
- Identify project risks early and drive aggressive mitigation strategies
- Maintain detailed status tracking and communicate progress, root cause findings, and outcomes to diverse audiences
- Coordinate frequently with autonomy, vehicle engineering, software, product, finance, and operations functions
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, ideally in Engineering, Computer Science, or another highly technical field
- At least 2 years of prior experience as an engineer or in a highly technical role
- At least 2 years managing direct reports, including mentoring and coaching
- At least 5 years of technical project management experience covering team management, planning, status updates, and risk management, ideally in fast-paced R&D settings
- Ability to clearly document ambiguous challenges so project teams can move efficiently
- Strong communication skills for explaining technical concepts and data-backed results to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Understanding of software and hardware development lifecycles, integration processes, and test/validation complexity
Nice to have
- Working-level knowledge of the autonomous vehicle industry
- 7+ years of project or program management experience
- 5+ years of experience managing direct reports, mentoring, and coaching
- Prior startup experience
