You'll be based in one of our offices in Germany and will be part of McKinsey's Transformation (MT) practice. You will serve on a client engagement team to help clients in their corporate restructuring efforts. Founded in 2010, MT is a unit of McKinsey that focuses exclusively on holistic transformations and corporate restructuring. We help clients drive rapid and dramatic performance improvement, and provide a full suite of services to support companies facing liquidity issues and insolvency. To do so, we pair experienced professionals who are drawn from the private equity industry and the restructuring ecosystem with our firm's global network of industry and functional experts. We are doers, and we work closely with clients to execute the steps needed to achieve extraordinary performance improvements.

MT has two service lines: Turnarounds & Transformations (T&T) and Corporate Restructuring (CR). While the T&T service line focuses on driving rapid performance improvement for any business with significant performance improvement potential and an aspirational leader (ranging from distressed to "good to great" situations), the CR service line focuses on leading complex corporate restructuring programs at companies facing acute performance issues, liquidity concerns, potential covenant violations, and other issues that are destabilizing to the enterprise.

What You'll Do

You will serve clients by leveraging a holistic, execution-centric approach, providing interim management and transformation leadership capabilities. To achieve proven results, you will apply all levers: including not only cost, but also revenue, strategy, organization, and capital. Your client engagements will often span 12-24 months, and they will include three phases: Independent Diligence Phase (6-8 weeks), Bottom Up Phase (6-8 weeks), and Implementation (6-12+ months). You will combine a strategic perspective with disciplined implementation to identify the strategic, operational, organizational, and financial levers that will deliver rapid and dramatic client impact. You will apply the firm's results-oriented and proprietary MT processes, which are backed by tools, benchmarks, and methodologies. You will have the opportunity to work in both T&T situations (driving holistic turnarounds) and CR situations (assisting clients in deep distress).

When you join McKinsey, you are joining a firm whose culture is distinctive and inclusive. We will accelerate your development as a leader to create positive, enduring change in the world.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree; master's degree or MBA is preferred
  • Prior coursework in accounting, corporate finance, valuation and/or restructuring
  • Experience in distressed situations (e.g., liquidity issues, covenant breaches, debt refinancing) plus working toward restoration of financial profitability and operational excellence
  • Track record of consistently delivering high-impact results to meet clients' needs
  • Experience working in professional service environments, especially management consulting, investment banking, private equity, or "Big Four" accounting, is preferred
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Robust understanding of financial and operational levers (e.g., business plan modeling, working capital management, financial statement analysis)
  • Experience with financial modeling and proficiency in financial analysis (e.g., linkages between financial statements, accrual vs. cash accounting, trial balances) is strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with various valuation methodologies (DCF, peer comps and transactions, etc.) as well as comfort with capital structure and debt analytics is strongly preferred
  • Experience working with large datasets and performing complex financial analyses; expertise in both Excel and PowerPoint
