Since its foundation in 2013, the Mercator Institute of China Studies (MERICS) has established itself as the leading European think tank on China. Employing more than 35 full‑time staff from all over Europe and internationally, MERICS is currently the largest European institute focusing solely on analysing contemporary China. With its headquarters in Berlin and an office in Brussels, the institute is regularly at the forefront of European and international public and expert debates on China.

MERICS has an established track record in analysing China’s economic and industrial ecosystems. Our research focuses on China’s political economy, macroeconomic developments, industrial policy, trade and investment strategies, foreign economic policy, and its growing global competitiveness.

Position Overview

You will be part of the Economy and Industry team, working closely with the Head of Program and under the overall direction of the institute’s Executive Team.

Responsibilities

  • Research and project development
    • Conduct original research on China’s economic developments and industrial dynamics by collecting and analysing data, monitoring policies, and producing reports.
    • Produce cutting‑edge analysis on China’s macroeconomic developments using data‑intensive, quantitative methods.
    • Contribute to regular publications of varying lengths and depth on developments in China’s economic and industrial trajectories.
    • Drive the delivery of external and internal projects and shape new research endeavours.
  • Outreach
    • Serve as an expert commentator in the media and engage in public outreach through presentations, talks, social media and other outlets.
    • Participate in public events and engage in consultative meetings with policy makers, companies, knowledge institutions and other stakeholders.
  • Development
    • Develop and lead the delivery of internal and externally‑funded projects, collaborating closely with members from different research teams at MERICS.
    • Manage ongoing research projects and coordinate with funders and partner organisations.
    • Guide and mentor junior colleagues and interns on team and project work.

Requirements

  • Strong academic background (BA minimum, MA/MSc or above encouraged) in economics, business studies, China studies/sinology, and/or international studies.
  • Fluency in English and a professional working command of Chinese (minimally HSK 5 or equivalent).
  • Ability to work with large datasets (working knowledge of Excel required).
  • Experience working with Chinese‑language primary sources.
  • Proven ability to conduct research and complete assignments of high quality.
  • High degree of flexibility and willingness to work as part of a team covering a wide scope of topics.
  • A proven background in at least two (for analysts) or three (for senior analysts/senior economists) of the following:
    • China’s political economy
    • Macroeconomic analysis
    • Trade and investment analysis
    • Policy monitoring (with an emphasis on economic, industrial, and/or monetary policy)
    • Chinese corporate strategies
    • China’s global economic footprint
    • Economic security
    • European corporate operations and strategies in China
    • Financial market analysis

Desired Skills

For all candidates

  • Candidates with a strong macroeconomic background will be given priority.
  • Proficiency in German or other European language (the working language at MERICS is English, but experts engage with stakeholders across Europe).
  • Proven technical understanding/expertise in one or more industries.
  • Experience in public speaking, media work and translating complex research into accessible content for both expert and non‑expert audiences.
  • Understanding of German and European China policy as it relates to economic and industrial matters.
  • Experience in bidding for projects and pursuing funding opportunities.
  • Coding skills

For senior analyst/senior economist candidates

  • Long‑term experience in related research work.
  • Experience with engagement with corporate leaders.
  • Experience with engagement with economic policymakers and officials.

What we offer

MERICS offers a flexible and stimulating work environment in a dynamic, multi‑disciplinary, and international team. The position can be based in Berlin or Brussels, with a competitive salary (commensurate with experience and qualifications) and excellent benefits. This is a full‑time position. You will be hired initially on a two‑year contract, with a probationary period of six months. We intend to make this a long‑term role, subject to conditions.
