Join us as a (Senior) Backend Engineer & Chapter Lead (m/f/d) in our Payment team on a shared journey that matters!
As a Chapter Lead, you balance dual roles. On one side, you engage hands-on with the day-to-day technical tasks of your team’s product development, collaborating with your peers to follow the roadmap and address new stories from the team backlog. On the other side, you take responsibility for the growth and development of a group of individuals outside your team—your chapter members (chaptees). This part of the role involves administrative people management tasks, mentoring, and supporting your chapter members in their career journeys and ensuring their personal and professional development at MOIA.
About the Payment Team
The Payment team is dedicated to delivering a convenient and secure payment experience to our passengers. We have successfully implemented robust payment solutions for millions of rides in Hamburg and Hanover, and are now taking on a new challenge: scaling our B2C payment system within a B2B2C/B2G2C licensing model across multiple European cities. This involves building infrastructure to integrate new payment providers and incorporating payment flows within MOIA’s extensive distributed system. Additionally, the team collaborates with other departments to develop key features and capabilities for our users. You will join a cross-functional team that includes a product manager, backend engineers, app developers, quality specialists, and an agile coach. The team shares an unwavering passion for creating impactful software solutions that not only cater to our current users but also allow for significant scalability. To achieve our ambitious goals, they design and maintain backend micro-services and mobile app components, always emphasizing a future-proof and resilient architecture.
What you will do
- Lead with Servant Leadership: Guide and inspire engineers using a servant leadership approach. By fostering a supportive and empowering environment, you will enable the overall career development of your chaptees.
- Proactively balance your hats: As Chapter Lead, you enjoy balancing your hats and setting clear expectations with the team. You will be spending 20% to 50% of your time on very empathetic people leadership tasks – changing over time and depending on the overall demands and projects in the larger organisation.
- Performance Focus: In collaboration with other roles, you will be responsible for fair and unbiased salaries across your chapter based on past performance.
- Be a role model: You represent the core values and principles of MOIA in people leadership as much as product delivery in the team. As a chapter lead in MOIA, you rise by lifting others.
- Culture Development: Together with the other Chapter Leads, you will play an active role in shaping and nurturing the MOIA tech culture, ensuring it remains innovative and inclusive.
- Provide an outstanding customer experience: Together with the developers of your team, you will contribute to a one-of-a-kind app which provides a smooth and friction-free experience to our customers.
- Assure Quality: Ensure the systems owned by your team meet the highest quality standards, including code reviews, testing, and validation processes across team boundaries.
- Breathing “agile”: You are a role model following core agile working methodologies in the team: you know DevOps best practices by heart, are familiar with automated testing, infrastructure as code, continuous deployment and production observability.
What will help you to fulfill your role
- With your customer-centric mindset, you drive the team’s contribution within their value stream.
- You have experience with or a strong interest in developing software in Scala and/or in functional programming in any other JVM language. Bonus if you know your way around Kubernetes on AWS .
- You know how to apply best practices with a high standard of quality while also being pragmatic on when your implementation is “good enough”.
- You have experience in leading people and taking care of their career growth.
- You have previous experience in attracting and retaining talent.
- You are aware of the dynamics in organisational development.
- Feedback in general and specific in pairing and code review is important for you.
- You know how to navigate and resolve conflicts both for yourself as well as for others.
We encourage you to apply even if your profile does not meet all the requirements for the role since we are looking for a diverse range of experiences, skills, and interests. We are certain that there will be something for everyone because we are working on such a variety of tasks and embrace individual growth at MOIA.
