RACE STRATEGIST & PERFORMANCE ENGINEER

GT3 Endurance Racing

KCMG Europe is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Race Strategist & Performance Engineer to join our high-performance GT3 endurance racing programmes.

This is a key engineering position within the KCMG Europe engineering group, combining responsibility for race strategy with detailed vehicle and driver performance analysis. The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Engineering, race engineers, drivers and wider team associates to develop and execute competitive race strategies while helping extract maximum performance from the car throughout testing, qualifying and endurance races.

THE ROLE

As Race Strategist & Performance Engineer, you will play a central role in both race execution and the continuous improvement of car performance.

You will be responsible for preparing, developing and implementing race strategy while using data analysis, simulation and performance engineering to support informed decision-making.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading race strategy preparation and execution during GT3 endurance events.
  • Developing pre-event strategy models covering fuel consumption, stint length, tyre usage, driver rotations and pit-stop timing.
  • Monitoring live race developments and adapting strategy according to traffic, weather, incidents, neutralisations and competitor behaviour.
  • Providing clear and decisive strategic recommendations to the Head of Engineering and race engineers.
  • Analysing sporting regulations and event-specific procedures to identify strategic opportunities and risks.
  • Preparing multiple race scenarios, contingency plans and decision-making processes before each event.
  • Supporting strategic decisions relating to Full Course Yellow, Code 60, Safety Car, Slow Zones and other race neutralisation procedures.
  • Monitoring competitor strategies, pit-stop cycles, tyre choices, driver rotations and relative pace.
  • Managing fuel targets, energy consumption, stint calculations and race projections.
  • Supporting tyre selection and usage planning throughout testing and race events.
  • Analysing vehicle performance using race and test data to identify areas for improvement.
  • Supporting vehicle setup development and overall performance optimisation.
  • Working closely with the race engineers to translate data and analysis into clear engineering actions.
  • Correlating driver feedback with vehicle data and identifying performance limitations.
  • Conducting detailed analysis of vehicle dynamics, tyres, braking, traction, aerodynamic balance and powertrain behaviour.
  • Monitoring car and driver performance trends across sessions and throughout endurance stints.
  • Supporting setup optimisation for the specific demands of the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
  • Developing and maintaining strategy, simulation and performance‑analysis tools.
  • Supporting driver performance analysis and identifying opportunities for lap-time and consistency improvements.
  • Analysing tyre performance and degradation under different track conditions, fuel loads and stint lengths.
  • Supporting correlation between simulation, testing and track performance.
  • Producing clear and actionable strategy and performance reports following sessions and events.
  • Contributing to the team’s longer‑term strategy and vehicle-performance development programme.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Race Strategist & Performance Engineer will be expected to take ownership of race strategy while providing the engineering team with clear, evidence‑based performance recommendations.

This includes:

Race Strategy

  • Pre-event race strategy preparation and simulation.
  • Fuel‑consumption modelling and stint‑length calculations.
  • Pit-window, tyre and driver‑rotation planning.
  • Live monitoring of race position, gaps, traffic and competitor strategies.
  • Continuous evaluation of strategic opportunities and risks.
  • Rapid recalculation of strategy following incidents or changing race conditions.
  • Preparation of contingency scenarios for neutralisations, weather changes and technical issues.
  • Clear communication of strategic recommendations under pressure.
  • Post-event review of strategy execution, decisions and outcomes.

DATA & Analysis

  • Advanced analysis of logged vehicle and timing data.
  • Development and maintenance of race strategy models and tools.
  • Lap, sector, stint and race‑pace analysis.
  • Driver comparison and performance benchmarking.
  • Competitor pace and strategic trend analysis.
  • Identification of setup sensitivities and performance limitations.
  • Trend analysis across multiple sessions and events.

Vehicle Performance

  • Vehicle dynamics analysis.
  • Tyre performance and degradation modelling.
  • Braking and traction performance.
  • Aerodynamic performance and balance.
  • Ride, platform and mechanical performance.
  • Understanding the relationship between setup changes, tyre behaviour, stint performance and race strategy.
  • Identifying the best compromise between qualifying performance, race pace, tyre life and consistency.

Driver Performance

  • Detailed driver performance and consistency analysis.
  • Correlation of driver feedback with objective vehicle data.
  • Identification of opportunities for driver and car optimisation.
  • Supporting driver coaching through clear, data‑driven feedback.
  • Evaluating driver performance across different fuel loads, tyre states and traffic conditions.
  • Supporting driver‑rotation planning based on pace, consistency, track conditions and regulatory requirements.

Trackside Engineering

  • Leading strategic analysis and decision support during race weekends.
  • Monitoring car, driver and competitor performance throughout sessions and stints.
  • Providing concise recommendations in a fast‑moving, high‑pressure environment.
  • Supporting engineering decisions during testing, practice, qualifying and races.
  • Maintaining accurate strategy records, decision logs and performance history.
  • Communicating effectively with race engineers, team management and operational personnel.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

We are looking for an experienced motorsport Race Strategist or Performance Engineer with a strong understanding of endurance racing and a proven ability to make accurate decisions under pressure.

You will ideally have:

  • Proven experience in professional motorsport engineering.
  • Previous race strategy and/or performance engineering experience within GT, endurance or comparable high‑level racing.
  • A strong understanding of endurance race strategy, pit‑stop cycles, driver rotations and race neutralisation procedures.
  • Experience developing and using race strategy simulations and decision‑support tools.
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle dynamics and race‑car performance.
  • Advanced experience with motorsport timing, data analysis and telemetry systems.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Experience working directly with professional drivers and race engineers.
  • A strong understanding of tyre behaviour, degradation and performance optimisation.
  • Experience operating trackside in a high‑pressure environment.
  • The ability to process large amounts of information and communicate clear decisions quickly.
  • A methodical, disciplined and highly organised approach.
  • Excellent communication skills and the confidence to provide decisive recommendations.
  • The ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary engineering group.
  • A strong understanding of how vehicle performance, driver performance and race strategy interact.

Experience with GT3 machinery, long‑distance endurance racing (SRO events) and the Nürburgring Nordschleife would be highly advantageous.

TECHNICAL PROFILE

The ideal candidate will be comfortable working with large volumes of timing, vehicle and competitor data and converting this information into clear strategic and engineering decisions.

Experience with professional motorsport data and strategy systems such as MoTeC, Bosch Motorsport, Cosworth, Atlas, HH Timing, HH Data Management, RaceWatch or equivalent platforms would be advantageous.

Strong capability in Excel and experience with MATLAB, Python, VBA or other modelling and data‑analysis tools would also be beneficial.

Knowledge of race simulation, lap‑time analysis, vehicle dynamics modelling, fuel modelling, tyre degradation and performance‑analysis tools is highly desirable.
