Principal Engineer – MVDC Circuit Breaker
We are recruiting on behalf of a leading global technology organisation for a Principal Engineer – MVDC Circuit Breaker to lead the development of innovative medium-voltage and MVDC protection technologies for next-generation power systems.
This is a highly technical role combining circuit breaker design, high-voltage testing, research and technical leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, simulate and test MV circuit breakers, including vacuum, solid-state and hybrid technologies.
- Develop innovative ultra-fast MVDC circuit breakers and protection solutions.
- Design and optimise Thomson coil actuators for performance and reliability.
- Establish MV/MVDC test circuits, develop prototypes and conduct high-voltage laboratory testing.
- Lead research collaborations with European universities and research institutions.
- Contribute to patents, technical publications and the development of new protection technologies.
- Ensure compliance with relevant IEC and IEEE standards.
Key Requirements
- 5+ years’ hands-on experience in MV/HVDC protection, circuit breaker design, fault analysis and interruption technologies.
- Strong knowledge of hybrid circuit breakers, ultra-fast protection, MVDC breakers and innovative interrupter technologies.
- Experience with DER integration, including PV and BESS, and advanced fault detection is desirable.
- Strong electromagnetic and thermal modelling experience for high-power applications.
- Proven experience in MV breaker development, technical innovation and leadership.
- Experience with real-time simulation or FPGA-based control systems.
- Experience with vacuum or gaseous circuit breakers is advantageous.
- Strong research background, with publications or collaboration with research institutions in MV protection technologies.
