Drone Engineer – Defence AI & Autonomous Systems
Neoterra Talent is a specialized talent partner for Europe’s Defence, Space & Dual-Use technology ecosystem. Through our network across leading DefenceTech companies and specialized talent, we connect exceptional people with some of Europe’s most ambitious technology companies. For one of our clients, a leading European Defence AI company, we are looking for a Field Engineer to help bring advanced autonomous and AI-enabled systems from prototype to operational deployment.
The Role
This is a highly hands‑on engineering role at the intersection of AI, hardware, autonomous systems and real‑world operations. Working closely with Software, AI and Product teams, you will test integrated hardware and software systems in the lab and in the field including drone/UAS operations: and help mature cutting‑edge defence technology into safe, reliable and deployable products.
What You’ll Do
- Test integrated hardware and software systems in laboratory and field environments.
- Conduct field trials, including drone/UAS testing, capture data and provide feedback to engineering teams.
- Prepare, transport, configure and operate technical equipment at test locations.
- Deploy AI software onto edge‑computing devices using internal tooling.
- Troubleshoot technical issues across complex systems.
- Develop and improve test plans, safety procedures and operational processes.
- Support the infrastructure required for effective field operations, including equipment, QA and secure storage.
- Contribute to end‑user training and in‑service support.
- Travel regularly to testing locations across Germany, France, the UK and wider Europe.
What We’re Looking For
- Strong technical aptitude across hardware and software systems.
- A hands‑on mindset and genuine curiosity about how complex systems work.
- Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to independently own critical workstreams.
- Clear communication with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Comfort working with rapidly evolving technology and prototypes.
- Willingness to travel and operate technology in real‑world environments.
- Genuine motivation to contribute to European defence, security and technological sovereignty.
Nice to Have
- Experience with drones/UAS, particularly fixed‑wing systems.
- UAV or aviation pilot licences/certifications.
- Experience in robotics, autonomous systems, aerospace or defence.
- Hardware/software integration or product testing experience.
- Experience training or supporting technical end users.
Why Join?
You’ll work on some of Europe’s most advanced Defence AI and autonomous systems, alongside highly experienced engineers and AI specialists. The environment combines the pace and ownership of a technology company with the complexity and real‑world impact of the defence sector. You can expect competitive compensation, equity, relocation support, development allowances, significant technical ownership and a culture focused on outcomes rather than time tracking.
Neoterra Talent and our client are committed to equal opportunities. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates regardless of background, identity or personal circumstances.
