Job Summary

The Department of Medical Social Sciences is seeking applicants for a Research Study Assistant. This position will perform biomedical and/or social-behavioral research by administering tests and/or questionnaires following protocols; collect, compile, tabulate and/or process responses; gather information; and/or assist in the preparation of material for inclusion in reports. Completes all activities by strictly following Good Clinical Practices (GCP) and all relevant current local, state, and federal laws, regulations, guidance, policy and procedure developed by the NU Institutional Review Board (IRB), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), and the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH).

This position is housed in the Department of Medical Social Sciences (MSS), a leader in advancing and applying outcomes/effectiveness research to improve patient care and influence policy. Our strong academic ties across the university and the medical school encourage comprehensive collaboration in disease management, prevention and control. We intend to meet a growing need for expanded interdisciplinary scientific collaboration, to promote discovery of multidimensional mechanisms of health and disease, to improve adult and pediatric health status and outcome assessment, and to collaborate with partners in genetic, epidemiologic, biologic and behavioral translational research paradigms.

This role will be in the lab of Dr. Kathryn Macapagal, a faculty member at MSS who conducts research on sexual health and HIV prevention among sexual and gender minority (SGM) adolescents. Dr. Macapagal holds an affiliation with the Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing (ISGMH), a university-wide institute dedicated to fostering research that improves the health and wellbeing of SGM communities. This position will be based in MSS and will have ample opportunities to interface with ISGMH.

The RA will be expected to support these team members on the day-to-day technical and administrative aspects of two NIH-funded projects (PI: Dr. Macapagal) focused on leveraging technology and social media for HIV prevention in SGM adolescents. The responsibility of the RA will encompass a wide range of tasks, including social media content creation, recruitment and retention efforts, and administrative support. The RA will assist with data analysis and preparing materials for meetings, presentations, and publications.

Administrative and financial tasks include preparing IRB protocols, scheduling meetings, coordinating travel, and managing financial transactions including expense tracking/reimbursement, processing, participant payments and others as assigned. This position has regular hours that may need to be flexed to meet participant/stakeholder needs (i.e., some evening and weekend hours as needed.) This is a 2-year term position with the opportunity for renewal based on performance and funding availability.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Technical: Recruits study participants. Reviews and obtains informed consent. Schedules study visits with participants. Conducts interviews. Scores test results. Collects survey data. Reviews medical records. Consults with study team to determine pretreatment and eligibility requirements of protocol from completion to registration of participants. Facilitates communication with key personnel and participants to maintain project study flow.
  • Administration: Maintains detailed records of results which may include collecting, extracting and entering data; and/or preparing basic charts and graphs. Performs scientific literature searches in support of research. Completes portions of grant applications and/or documents associated with current local, state, and federal regulatory guidelines, requirements, laws and research protocols.
  • Finance: May process reimbursements for travel expenses. Monitors and distributes petty cash. Processes invoices and/or purchase requisitions. Coordinates fund distribution among multiple sponsors and clinical sites.
  • Supervision: May train other research staff to interview/test participants.
  • Miscellaneous: Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in a social or health science + no experience or 2 years practical research study or related experience is required. Must complete NU's IRB CITI training before interacting with any participants and must re-certify every 3 years.
