Photonics / Systems Engineer (m/f/d) Quantum Technologies

Your Tasks

This is akey role in implementation of technology and missions with focus onsatellite-based quantum communication. With your strong expertise in integratedphotonics you are the point of contact for the engineering team when it comesto technical questions in this context. With your passion for quantumtechnologies, you will prospectively act as the technical point of contact forsubcontractors and customers in the fields of photonics and quantumtechnologies and systems.
We arelooking for someone interested in vertical technology development, hands-onmentality and strong background in integrated photonic circuit design andsimulation. And at the same time willingness to take a system levelperspective, technically managing entire units in the context of quantumcommunication.
Your responsibilities will span the full systems engineering lifecycle—fromrequirements definition to testing, validation, and verification. Ideally youhave already first expertise in the context of System Engineering.

In yourdaily work this will translate into following key responsibilities:

• QuantumTechnologies & Secure Communication
• Contribute to studies andearly-phase projects (Phases 0/A/B) focused on quantum technologies
• Support implementationprojects (Phases B/C/D/E) in the context of secure and quantumcommunication systems with focus on vertical technology development andphotonic integrated circuits

SystemsEngineering

• Define and manage customer,mission, and system requirements
• Develop specifications forsystems and subsystems, including interface engineering
• Define technical baselines andbudgets for systems and subsystems
• Perform trade-offs oftechnical and programmatic solutions
• Compile documentationaccording to space standards

TechnicalImplementation

• Design, layout, simulate and tape-outphotonic integrated circuit in a fabless manufacturing workflow
• Chip level and packaged PICtesting and verification in an iterative development
• Development and implementationof technology units in the laboratory up to TRL 4
• Overview and management oftechnical solutions developed externally for particular systems andsubsystems up to TRL9
• Reporting and technicalcontact person towards stakeholders for particular systems and subsystems

Testing,Validation & Verification

• Plan and execute testcampaigns at system and subsystem levels
• Conduct laboratory work toimplement validation and verification activities
• Analyze and trade-offperformance-related parameters e.g. for time, frequency and polarizationsynchronization between satellite and ground

Project& Work Package Management

• Manage work packages andsub-projects within larger projects
• Represent the work packagesand/or sub-project(s) as technical point-of-contact towardssucontractors and customers

ProposalDevelopment

• Participate in or leadproposal creation, particularly in the domain of quantum technologies
• Define technical baselines anddevelopment logic for proposals
• Define study and developmentlogic, including work breakdown structures
• Support budget definition andengineering activities

Your Qualifications

• Master in Physics, photonics,quantum optics or related field
• Proven knowledge in photonicintegrated circuit design, tape-out and testing
• Experience with PDK-baseddesign on InP platform is a plus
• Passion for quantumtechnologies and/or quantum communications
• Experience with Quantum KeyDistribution (QKD) concepts and systems
• Knowledge in systemengineering for space, e.g. requirement definition and/or MBSE is anadvantage
• Hands-on experience in the labin the context of technology development up to TRL 4, ideally in thecontext of QKD for space-based applications or free space optics
• Experience with programming(python, C, C++) for hardware integration, automation, development andsystem testing is a plus
• Strong solution oriented,self-managed and pro-active working style
• Passion for technology and themotivation to turn ideas into reality
