Your mission

You are a dynamic and results-driven 4G/5G NTN-TN RF Engineering Architect reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, bridging the technical and commercial teams, leading the development and lifecycle of OIQ’s NTN-TN handheld and land mobility MOVE product and embedded software intelligence.

You will work cross-functionally across technical, commercial and marketing teams defining product requirements, prioritizing features, and delivering exceptional customer experiences aligned to the company’s strategic and innovative direction.

The 4G/5G NTN-TN RF Engineering Architect (m/f/d) is responsible for embedded handheld and mobility product development leadership, planning, execution, test support and accompanying the commercial market rollout of our land mobility and handheld device software product deployment throughout their product lifecycle.

Youare and will be:

  • Proficient in network planning and simulation
  • Leading OIQ’s digital hardware architecture engineering (particularly for modems and modem accelerators, including application processors, etc.) including communications systems software stacks
  • Supporting the evaluation of component and subsystem-level partners for unique components
  • Leading the physical layer and protocol stack software architecture development
  • Reviewing and evaluating all mission end-to-end logical interfaces including software interfaces and applications related to spaceborne platforms, subsystem and terrestrial handheld user terminal RF control, protocol stacks, battery management, etc.
  • Architecting and developing a hybrid satellite-terrestrial (i.e., NTN-TN) communication solution ensuring seamless interoperability for mobility and handheld device use cases
  • Planning and executing integration and system test specifications
  • Defining, managing, translating and integrating user terminal (edge and handheld device) and gateway requirements specifications into wireless system architectures aligned with:
  • 3GPP Releases 15 and later, ETSI, ITU, FCC and other respective international standards bodies
  • Designing and optimizing radio access (RAN), core and transport network components supporting adaptive, low-latency and high throughput ubiquitous connectivity
  • Implementing network strategies for LEO/MEO/GEO satellite constellations with 5G/LTE/RedCap cellular networks
  • Developing and optimizing NTN-TN spectrum sharing, interference mitigation and beamforming strategies
  • Defining and managing feeder link requirements specifications, including
  • Interfacing from currently existing terrestrial networks (TN) into the non-terrestrial network (NTN) whereby feeder links exchange both data and control
  • Providing integrated support to end-to-end mission service provisioning architecture and data path integrity (end-to-end RF communications chain; platform and onboard payload; edge and handheld device user terminals and integrated modems; etc.)
  • Driving board and subsystem-level breadboard development, testing and validation of critical architecture building blocks
  • Conducting laboratory and field testing including Over-The-Air (OTA) and real-world drive testing for NTN-TN interoperability across both mobile edge and handheld devices
  • Working together with the network design and development team focusing upon:
  • Network simulation;
  • Subsystem integration; and
  • Proof-of-Concept deployments and demonstrations
  • Coordinating external partnerships, as required
  • Managing and planning respective deliveries from contract suppliers, including:
  • Milestone definition and execution to plan;
  • Project plan signoffs; and
  • Subsystem integrations
  • Defining and planning mission and system / subsystem delivery sign-off of subcontractor and partner deliverables including work packages and managing milestone product deliverables
  • Acting as the primary point of contact for all topics related to cellular wireless solutions development and deployment across OIQ’s partner and customer ecosystem while ensuring stakeholder alignment on objectives, timelines and deliverables
  • Working closely with hardware, software and AI team members while maintaining detailed technical documentation (i.e., GitHub)
  • Leading and mentoring OIQ’s working student and interns and extended development team members together with the CTO across topics of 4G/5G/LTE across LEO/MEO/GEO NTN-TN ubiquitous session persistent connectivity including regular one-on-one meetings, internal and external presentations and milestones while ensuring smooth interactions across team members

Your profile

  • Bachelor's / Master's / Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Wireless Communications, Telecommunications, Computer Science or similar fields
  • 8+ years’ experience in wireless systems engineering, particularly in cellular handheld and satellite communications within the telecommunications, aerospace and/or automotive sectors
  • Deep understanding of 3GPP standards, including Release 17+ NTN specifications and cellular protocols (5G NR, LTE, NB-IoT)
  • Expertise in radio access networks (RAN), core networks (EPC, 5GC) and transport networks
  • Strong knowledge of RF communications, beamforming, MIMO, waveform design and link budget analyses for both terrestrial and satellite links
  • Hands-on experience with modulation techniques, spectrum allocation and interference management
  • Fluency in MatLab, HGSS, ADS, Ansys, Python, C++ and/or other simulation tools for wireless system modeling
  • Hands-on experience with RF test equipment (vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, signal generators)
  • Deep proficiency of modulation techniques (OFDM, QAM, DSSS), MIMO and adaptive RF systems
  • Experience with embedded systems development
  • Experience with testing tools such as Keysight, Rohde & Schwarz, Viavi, Anritsu, Spirent, Amarisoft for cellular and satellite network validation
  • Experience with IoT/embedded systems, edge AI and cloud-based telematics solutions
  • Knowledge with tools such as Jira, Confluence, Outline, GitHub, Microsoft Suite
  • Knowledge of underlying technology stack, APIs, and end-to-end architectural components
  • Customer-oriented team leadership with strong communication and presentation skills
  • Demonstrable success collaborating with diverse stakeholders ensuring product alignment
  • Solid and confident ability handling ambiguity in a fast-paced environment
  • Fluent in German and English
  • Currently based in Munich (or soon to be relocating to) with German driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in LEO/MEO/GEO satellite communications and network slicing for NTN-TN integration
  • Hands-on experience with O-RAN, SDN and cloud-native 5G core architectures
  • Hands-on experience with electronically steered antennas (ESAs), phased arrays and mmWave technologies
  • Familiarity with V2X, C-V2X, DSRC, edge computing and AI-driven network optimization
  • Prior work in automotive, rail, agriculture, fleet and/or aerospace connectivity solutions
  • Hands-on experience with containerized networking (i.e., Kubernetes, Docker)
