Position Summary, Requirements, and Qualifications

The Electrical Engineering Department offers B.S. ( ABET accredited) as well as M.S. and PhD. in Electrical Engineering. The department is well established and enjoys a solid reputation for graduating students, research, and service to the community and profession.

The department consists of 7 full-time faculty members, 3 Adjunct and 1 full-time lab instructor, and approximately 200 undergraduate and 50 graduate students. The department has well established Laboratories for Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Design, Digital Communication, Digital Signal Processing, Electrodynamics, Integrated Circuits, Intelligent Networks and Systems, Microelectronics, Microwave and Electromagnetics, Robotics and Intelligent Systems, and many more supporting labs across CEET .
The successful candidate is expected to conduct collaborative research with faculty across our campus. Strong ties with industries and national laboratories in the Northern Illinois region, including Argonne and Fermi, have helped Electrical Engineering faculty to attract externally funded research projects on a regular basis. NIU has about 16,000 students and is located approximately 65 miles west of Chicago. NIU’s vision is to be an engine for innovation to advance social mobility; promote personal, professional and intellectual growth; and transform the world through research, artistry, teaching and outreach. To further support that vision, the CEET offers Ph.D. degrees in electrical, mechanical, and industrial and systems engineering. In addition, the College has recently started to offer B.S. degree programs in Biomedical Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering.

Position Summary

The Chair is responsible for leading and administering the graduate and baccalaureate programs in electrical engineering. They will execute departmental administrative, financial, and planning functions; develop and enhance industrial contacts and initiatives; facilitate grant and contract activities; be an advocate for the department; teach undergraduate and graduate courses; oversee enrollment management; advise students and serve as a member of the senior leadership team of the college.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Leading and administering the graduate and baccalaureate programs in Electrical Engineering
• Executing and facilitating all departmental administrative, financial, and planning functions including: faculty and staff hiring and supervision; workload assignment; tenure and promotion evaluations and student advising.
• Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses as needed.
• Managing regular faculty and staff evaluations.
• Overseeing student learning outcomes, program assessment and accreditation; oversee enrollment management.
• Being an advocate for the department and serving as a member of the senior leadership team of the college.
• Facilitating interdisciplinary collaborations to broaden the research portfolio of the department while simultaneously manage the teaching mission of the department.
• Working closely with NIU and CEET to enhance recruitment efforts for community colleges transfers as well as high school students.
• Developing and enhancing industrial contacts and initiatives and facilitating grant and contract activities.

Minimum Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
• Distinguished and proven record in teaching, external funded research, scholarly
  publications, and engaging leadership.

• An earned doctorate degree in engineering or closely related field.
• Academic experience showing leadership capabilities with good administrative and communication skills.
• Strong commitment to teaching excellence and hands-on laboratory-based instructions.
• Dedication to continued professional development.
• Demonstrated interest in working with students at undergraduate, and graduate (M.S. and Ph.D.) levels.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Strong commitment to equity and diversity is expected.
