Job Description: Social Scientist
Peraton is seeking a Social Scientist experienced in working with diverse teams of linguists, analysts, and information operations (IO) planners to translate empirical research findings into operational assessments. The ability to work collaboratively in a team environment is essential.
This position is based on-site in Stuttgart, Germany.
Position Summary:
The Social Scientist will oversee analytic and assessment projects evaluating the information environment (IE) in the USAFRICOM area of responsibility (AOR). Responsibilities include creating assessment reports such as briefs, PowerPoint presentations, and inputs into C2IE (Command and Control in the Information Environment). Familiarity with data analytic tools and AI-enabled research methods (e.g., large language models, machine learning, natural language processing) is preferred. Experience working with opinion research vendors is also desirable.
What You’ll Do:
- Conduct assessments of the information environment using opinion research data, intelligence, operational reporting, and social media insights, leveraging AI-enabled tools.
- Provide data visualization and explain quantitative and qualitative analyses from research teams and vendors.
- Assist in designing opinion research and interpreting findings, including surveys, flash polls, focus groups, and interviews.
- Prepare status reports, identify project issues and risks, and develop resolutions to meet goals and client expectations.
- Develop and coordinate assessment and collection plans for theater reporting in the C2IE system.
- Coordinate with stakeholders to collect social, cultural, economic, political, religious, and regional indicators from various sources.
- Review studies for reliability and validity for potential use in theater assessments.
- Support innovative social science research initiatives, educate staff, and report findings to senior decision-makers.
- Work independently or collaboratively with social scientists inside and outside the theater.
Minimum Requirements:
- 8+ years relevant experience with a BA, 6+ years with a Master’s, or 3+ years with a PhD.
- Ability to engage senior leaders and staff, and conduct briefings for large audiences.
- Experience with Army/Joint Targeting, IPB, Intelligence cycle, and COG analysis.
- Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products.
- Willingness to travel within USAFRICOM AOR.
- Current U.S. Passport and active DoD TS security clearance with SCI eligibility.
Desired Qualifications:
- PhD in psychology, sociology, anthropology, behavioral sciences, or social sciences with over 9 years of applicable experience.
- Master’s degree in political science, international relations, area studies, or related fields.
- Knowledge of AI-enabled analytics and cloud computing.
- Current TS/SCI clearance.
- Experience with data analytic tools (e.g., Babel X, Predata, Zignal, Shadow Dragon).
- Operational experience in Military Information Support Operations (MISO)/Psychological Operations (PSYOP).
- Joint intelligence or operational experience with U.S. Geographical Combatant Commands.
- Focus on USAFRICOM AOR and related issues.
- Knowledge of JOPP, MDMP, MCPP planning and targeting processes.
- Experience with USINDOPACOM, USSOCPAC, or similar AORs.
- Statistical analysis skills using IBM SPSS/PASW, R, STATA, or MS Excel.
- Experience with campaign and operational assessments.
