About the Role
We’re looking for a highly specialized Narrative Systems Research Lead to operate at the intersection of storytelling, narratology, linguistics, and AI-powered content systems.
This is a unique role focused on helping Pocket FM better understand, structure, and scale narrative content through AI-assisted workflows and storytelling frameworks. The role will bridge deep academic understanding of narrative theory with practical implementation across product, content, and AI systems.
You will partner closely with Product, AI, and Content teams to help define how narrative structure, author voice, pacing, and storytelling patterns can be translated into scalable tools and systems for creators.
This role is ideal for someone with a strong background in narratology, literature, linguistics, computational storytelling, or narrative systems research who is excited about applying those concepts in a real-world creative and AI-driven environment.
We are open to candidates globally, with preference for the US or Europe. Part-time engagement may also be considered for the right candidate.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop narrative frameworks and planning systems to support large-scale serialized storytelling across hundreds of hours of content
- Research and apply concepts from narratology, literary theory, linguistics, and computational storytelling to improve AI-assisted creative workflows
- Partner with Product, AI, and Content teams to explore how narrative structure, pacing, character development, and author voice can be modeled and operationalized within creative tools
- Help design and evaluate systems that personalize AI-assisted writing workflows to individual authors and storytelling styles
- Collaborate with writers and creative teams to better understand narrative patterns, storytelling mechanics, and audience engagement behaviors
- Experiment across different AI and language model platforms to evaluate effectiveness for narrative development and content generation
- Support the development of narrative planners, story architecture systems, and author personalization tooling
- Act as a bridge between academic narrative theory and practical product implementation within a fast-moving creative environment
- Guide early-stage experimentation and research around AI-native storytelling systems and narrative generation
About You
- Advanced academic background in narratology, literature, linguistics, computational storytelling, digital humanities, or a related field
- PhD, postdoctoral research experience, or equivalent deep specialization strongly preferred
- Strong understanding of narrative theory, story composition, serialized storytelling, and long-form content structure
- Experience researching, writing, or publishing work related to storytelling systems, narrative analysis, linguistics, or AI-assisted narrative generation
- Strong interest in AI, language models, and the future of storytelling technology
- Ability to translate abstract narrative concepts into practical systems, frameworks, and workflows
- Comfortable operating cross-functionally with product, engineering, AI, and creative teams
- Strong analytical thinking, communication, and research skills
- Experience with computational linguistics, machine learning, AI systems, or narrative generation is a strong plus
- Background as a linguist, computational scientist, ML/AI engineer with narrative training, or narrative researcher with technical fluency is highly valued
