The Market Intelligence Director / Competitor Research Lead / Commercial Trend Analyst develops research and insights that help the organisation understand market conditions, competitive activity, customer priorities, and commercial opportunities. This role combines structured research, data analysis, and business interpretation to support strategic planning, market positioning, product development, and growth decisions.
The position works closely with Corporate Strategy, Sales, Marketing, Product, Finance, Business Development, and regional leadership teams. Responsibilities include monitoring competitors, assessing market size and growth potential, analysing pricing and product propositions, researching customer segments, and evaluating emerging industry trends. The role draws on public information, licensed research, internal commercial data, and primary research to produce competitor profiles, market assessments, opportunity evaluations, and executive briefings.
At director or lead level, the role establishes research priorities, analytical standards, and an intelligence programme aligned with business objectives. It manages research teams and external providers, challenges assumptions, and translates findings into practical recommendations. The role distinguishes verified evidence from estimates, assesses uncertainty, and communicates the implications of market changes so that stakeholders can prioritise investments, respond to competitive developments, and evaluate commercial risks.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Marketing, Finance, Statistics, International Business, or a related field.
- A master’s degree, MBA, or relevant qualification in market research, strategy, or business analytics is an advantage.
- Experience in market intelligence, competitive research, commercial analysis, strategic consulting, or business research.
- For director-level positions, demonstrated experience leading research teams, managing budgets, and advising senior decision-makers.
- Strong ability to design research programmes, define business questions, select appropriate methods, and deliver actionable findings.
- Experience conducting secondary research, expert interviews, customer research, surveys, or other relevant primary research.
- Ability to assess market size, growth drivers, customer segments, demand patterns, and market-entry opportunities.
- Experience analysing competitor strategies, product portfolios, pricing, distribution channels, partnerships, and commercial positioning.
- Strong analytical skills, including the ability to evaluate quantitative data alongside qualitative evidence.
- Proficiency in Excel, presentation software, research databases, and business-intelligence or visualisation tools.
- Ability to assess source credibility, reconcile conflicting information, document assumptions, and communicate research limitations.
- Experience developing competitor profiles, market maps, commercial forecasts, scenario assessments, and executive reports.
- Strong commercial awareness and understanding of how market developments affect revenue, margins, customer acquisition, and investment priorities.
- Excellent communication, presentation, stakeholder-management, and influencing skills, with the ability to explain complex findings clearly.
- Sound judgement, intellectual curiosity, attention to detail, and commitment to ethical research and appropriate handling of confidential information.
