R&D Scientist – Experimental Psychology & Cognitive Biomarkers

Vision being the dominant human sense, eye tracking constitutes a powerful approach for understanding the human mind! At Pupil Labs, our mission is to provide cutting-edge eye-tracking solutions, which are more robust, accurate, accessible, and user-friendly than ever before. Already today, our products empower thousands of users in academia and industry, clinical surgeons, elite athletes, astronauts on the International Space Station, and many more. Unlocking the full potential of eye-tracking technology relies on solving hard research problems, ranging from core gaze-estimation algorithms to developing cloud-based algorithmic tools allowing for the high-level analysis of terabytes of egocentric video data.

The interdisciplinary R&D team at Pupil Labs, comprising members with backgrounds in Computer Science, Computational Neuroscience, Mathematics, and Physics, is tackling these challenges head-on! In close collaboration with other engineering teams, we identify promising R&D avenues and take pride in seeing our results swiftly integrated into the latest products shipped to our customers.

To support our efforts, we are looking to grow our R&D team in Berlin with a full-time R&D Scientist with expertise in experimental psychology, cognitive science, and psychophysics. This is an on-site position (with up to two home-office days per week).

Pupil Labs offers a competitive salary, flexible work arrangements, a great team of coworkers, a young and dynamic company structure, and a culture of participation and feedback.

You are excited about joining an ambitious, international, diverse, interdisciplinary, young, enthusiastic, and talented team of researchers and software specialists? You have a growth mindset, thrive in fast-paced work environments, and enjoy working on hard problems? Then we are looking forward to hearing from you!

What you would do

  1. Design, implement, and run controlled psychophysical and behavioral experiments in both lab and real-world settings.
  2. Develop and evaluate biomarkers for cognitive load, attention, and related cognitive states using eye-tracking and physiological signals.
  3. Work closely with data scientists and modelers to validate stochastic and biophysical models of pupil light response (PLR) and cognitive function.
  4. Analyze and interpret experimental data using statistical modeling, signal analysis, and machine learning techniques.
  5. Ensure experimental rigor by implementing best practices for experiment design, hypothesis testing, and statistical inference.
  6. Develop and maintain experimental protocols, ensuring high-quality data collection and reproducibility.
  7. Collaborate with internal teams to translate findings into actionable insights for next-generation eye-tracking applications.

Who you are

  1. You hold a Master’s degree or PhD in experimental psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, psychophysics, human factors, or a related field, OR have equivalent research experience in industry or academia.
  2. You have hands-on experience designing and conducting behavioral experiments with human participants, including study design, data collection, and analysis.
  3. You are familiar with cognitive biomarker research, including measures of cognitive load, attention, and physiological responses.
  4. You are proficient in data analysis and statistics, including experience with Python for experimental and statistical analysis.
  5. You have experience with experiment design tools (e.g., PsychoPy, Psychtoolbox, jsPsych, Presentation, OpenSesame).
  6. You are knowledgeable in statistical modeling, including frequentist and Bayesian inference.
  7. Ideally, you have experience working with eye-tracking or physiological signals (e.g., pupil dynamics, EEG, ECG, GSR).
  8. You are comfortable in written and spoken English.

A beautiful office in the heart of Berlin.

Up to two home-office days per week.

15 mobile-office days per year.
