We are working with a leading global commodities trading business seeking a shipping counsel to join their legal department.
This is a high-impact role supporting commercial activity across freight, chartering, and trading operations in a fast-paced, international environment.
The Role You will advise on a broad range of shipping and freight matters, working closely with traders, operators, and commercial teams on live transactions and ongoing operations.
Key responsibilities will include:
Drafting and negotiating charterparties (voyage, time charters, COAs)
Advising on freight and chartering issues, including laytime, demurrage, and off-hire
Providing legal support on trading activity during voyages, including cargo diversions and delivery issues
Advising on bills of lading, letters of indemnity, and title/risk issues
Working closely with commercial teams on
real-time
operational decision-making
Candidate Profile
UK or common law qualified lawyer with 5+ years' PQE
Strong experience in shipping law, ideally with a focus on chartering and freight
Background from a leading law firm or in-house legal team
Experience advising on commercial shipping operations (not ship finance)
Experience with tanker or dry bulk shipping is advantageous
Exposure to commodity trading clients or trading environments is highly desirable
Commercially minded, pragmatic, and comfortable working in a fast-paced setting
