Senior Underwriter Casualty
The opportunity
As a Senior Casualty Underwriter, you will take ownership of a complex portfolio, driving underwriting strategy, profitability, and client engagement. You will act as a senior technical expert, influencing business decisions and supporting the development of the Casualty line within a growing and evolving market context. This role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to QBE’s expansion by developing new business opportunities, strengthening broker relationships, and enhancing underwriting excellence.
Your new role
Key responsibilities involve generating new business, retaining renewals, and ensuring the overall profitability of a specific designated book of business within QBE’s Casualty portfolio.
- Support the development of the annual business plan for the Casualty portfolio and ensure delivery of the plan.
- Underwrite complex and high-value Casualty risks in line with QBE’s risk appetite and strategic objectives.
- Establish strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including customers, brokers, business partners and colleagues, to maximise influence and achieve business objectives.
- Act as a senior technical expert to support the identification of issues and opportunities.
- Contribute and influence in the review and analysis of the portfolio to identify progress toward business objectives.
- Contribute to the peer review processes to encourage and develop excellence.
- Apply the Reinsurance Strategy to safeguard the portfolio.
- Adhere to underwriting standards, instructions, and good practice to minimise risk and maximise efficiency.
- Continually develop expertise and technical knowledge through identifying and implementing appropriate learning and development activities.
- Manage resources across the team to ensure business requirements are achieved.
About You
- Significant senior‑level experience in the Casualty Insurance market, with a proven track record of underwriting complex risks.
- Strong commercial acumen with the ability to balance risk selection and profitability.
- Recognised technical expertise, with the ability to act as a reference point within the team.
- Excellent negotiation and relationship management skills with brokers and clients.
- Strong analytical and decision‑making capabilities in a fast‑paced, complex environment.
- Ability to manage a substantial and complex underwriting pipeline.
- Fluent English and German are mandatory (both written and spoken).
- Strong communication skills and ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
- Motivation to contribute to a growing business and actively support expansion initiatives.
