The Lead Physiotherapist & Rehabilitation Coordinator provides clinical leadership, operational oversight, and strategic direction to ensure high-quality physiotherapy, rehabilitation, and player availability across the academy. The role leads the physiotherapy team, oversees complex case management, and ensures alignment of assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, documentation, and communication with the academy’s Return-to-Performance (RTP) model and RB Leipzig medical philosophy.
Acting as the bridge between medical and athletic departments, this position ensures cohesive interdisciplinary planning, consistent rehab standards, and clear communication around player status and timelines. Success in this role requires strong leadership presence, advanced clinical reasoning, and the ability to uphold a culture of care, accountability, and performance excellence.
Job Description
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead, mentor, and manage the physiotherapy & rehabilitation team across all age groups, ensuring consistent professional standards, clinical quality, and reliable coverage of training and matches
- Provide advanced clinical expertise through supporting complex assessments, second opinions, and structured decision-making for acute, overuse, and long-term cases
- Coordinate and oversee rehabilitation planning, ensuring alignment between medical recovery, reconditioning progressions, and return-to-performance criteria
- Maintain high standards of clinical governance, including documentation quality, case audits, GDPR compliance, and injury reporting in AP Hub
- Drive interdisciplinary collaboration with athletic development, sport science, psychology, and coaching staff to support unified planning and RTP decision-making
- Lead departmental CPD, case reviews, and professional development, modelling reflective practice, calm leadership, and high interpersonal standards
- Monitor injury trends, rehab timelines, and player availability, identifying risks and contributing solutions to enhance performance outcomes
- Support strategic planning for the academy medical and performance model, identifying opportunities for innovation, efficiency, and enhanced player care
QUALIFICATIONS
- Full professional registration/licence to practise
- Additional qualifications in sports medicine, rehabilitation, or emergency care (desirable)
- Significant experience (6+) in elite sport physiotherapy, including leadership of clinical teams and management of complex injury cases
- Advanced assessment, diagnosis, and rehabilitation skills, with strong clinical reasoning and the ability to support staff through challenging cases
- Deep understanding of RTP models, load management, and interdisciplinary integration across medical and athletic departments
- Excellent communication, influence, and relationship-building skills — able to manage high-pressure conversations with clarity and professionalism
- Strong organisational and operational management skills, ensuring clear scheduling, documentation, and workflow consistency across the department
- Collaborative mindset — able to unify physiotherapy, athletic development, sport science, and coaching toward consistent objectives
- Emotional intelligence and calm leadership — able to support staff development, provide constructive feedback, and maintain high standards during demanding periods
- Commitment to continuous learning, clinical governance, and driving a high-performance, player-centred medical environment
- Fluent German and fluent or near-fluent English. French language skill is also a desirable asset
