The WTO Secretariat maintains a limited internship programme for post‑graduate university students wishing to gain practical experience and deeper knowledge of the multilateral trading system. Only a limited number of such internship posts is available. The WTO Internship Programme is open to post‑graduate students from all WTO members and countries or customs territories engaged in accession negotiations. Position
Position: Intern – Fisheries Subsidies Unit (Fish Team) – Rules Division. Duration: Six months. Responsibilities
Conduct research and draft briefing notes on fisheries subsidies, and on global, regional and national fisheries legal frameworks, policies and practices, including in respect of fisheries management. Contribute to the work of the Committee on Fisheries Subsidies and the Negotiating Group on Rules, including data collection and research on best practices and lessons learned from other WTO bodies. Follow and report on fisheries subsidies‑related meetings. Qualifications
Basic knowledge of fisheries‑related legal frameworks, including the law of the sea, fisheries management or fisheries subsidies. Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to handle multiple workstreams under pressure and with strict deadlines, desire to learn and share knowledge together in a team. Current students or recent graduates of postgraduate programmes (Master’s/PhD) in a related field. Excellent speaking, reading and writing skills in English. Working knowledge of French or Spanish would be an asset but not mandatory. Minimum age 21 years and maximum age 30 years. Completed at least one year of postgraduate studies. Rules and Procedures
Interns are recruited from nationals of WTO Member states and observer governments. An agreement will be established between the intern and the Director of the Human Resources Division specifying the conditions of service and details of any remuneration. Paid interns receive a daily allowance of CHF 60 (including weekends and official holidays). Internship taken in Geneva, Switzerland. Travel expenses and insurance are the intern’s responsibility. Internship duration: minimum 3 months, maximum 6 months, may be split between two Divisions (3 months each, not exceeding 6 months total) and not consecutive if criteria are met. No return to the programme after completing the full six‑month internship and no moving from one programme to another following a six‑month stint. Interns are expected to work full‑time, are not considered staff members but are bound by the same duties and obligations as regular staff. Interns may work from home only in exceptional circumstances such as COVID, following WTO Health Task Force guidance. Termination may occur by the WTO Secretariat or the intern with one week’s notice. Closing
