Legal Affairs Officer – Trade and Environment Division
Grade: 7 | Fixed‑term contract, two years with possible extension. Annual salary: CHF 96,290.00. Open to external candidates and WTO staff on short‑term, fixed‑term or regular contracts. Position overview: The officer will support the Trade and Environment Division in its work at the intersection of trade and environment, including service to the Trade and Environment (CTE) and Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) committees. Responsibilities
Support the Director of the Division and the Head of the Environment Section in committee and analytical work concerning trade‑related aspects of climate change, circular economy, biodiversity, sustainable value chains, plastics pollution and sustainable plastics trade. Draft technical reports, information notes, briefs, summaries, talking points and other outputs for the Division and related committees. Conduct legal and policy research and analysis on trade and environment issues. Deliver technical assistance and training on trade and environment, prepare diagnostic reports and contribute to the development of training materials. Participate in Division activities, cooperate with multilateral environmental agreements and other stakeholders, and keep the Division current on relevant developments in law, sustainable development and policy. Qualifications
Advanced university degree in international trade law, economics or a related field. Minimum three years’ relevant work experience, including experience with environment‑related issues. Excellent technical, analytical, policy‑oriented research and drafting skills. Strong knowledge of the interface between trade and the environment and WTO‑related policies. Good knowledge of the Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade, especially environmental standards and regulations affecting trade in goods. Digital proficiency; use of AI tools considered an asset. Effective communication skills; able to convey information clearly to specialist and generalist audiences. Ability to work swiftly, meet strict deadlines, and manage details accurately. Team player who can also work independently to achieve objectives. Languages
Excellent English (speaking and writing); knowledge of French or Spanish is an asset. Other Information
