2-year Ph D position (m/f/d) in ‘Atomic-scale characterization of solid electrolyte interphases in lithium batteries’ (salary 13 TV-L, 100%)

The chair of Atomic-scale Characterisation studies materials at the atomic level.

The project focuses on developing high-energy-density rechargeable battery technologies by understanding interfacial chemistry at the electrode/electrolyte interfaces.

A fixed-term, full-time position starts on 15 August 2026 or at the earliest possible date.

Scope: full-time. Duration: 2 years. Start: 15 August 2026.

Your tasks

  • Assemble batteries in the glovebox, perform battery cycling tests and electrochemical testing such as cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in varying electrolytes.
  • Perform cryogenic scanning electron microscopy/focused ion beam experiments for imaging and chemical analysis.
  • Perform cryogenic SEM/FIB experiments for preparing atom probe specimens.
  • Carry out atom probe tomography experiments on SEI layers formed after different cycles.
  • Carry out atom probe tomography experiments on SEI layers formed at different temperatures.
  • Write manuscripts for papers.

Your profile

  • An excellent master degree in materials science, electrochemistry, inorganic or organic chemistry.
  • Project experience with lithium metal or ion batteries.
  • Familiarity with assembling cells and performing electrochemical cycling tests for non-aqueous or aqueous batteries.
  • Solid knowledge of electrochemistry or relevant project experiences.
  • Experience with operating scanning electron microscopy/focused ion beam.
  • A high level of spoken and written English.
  • Self‑motivated and eager to learn.
  • Capability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.

Optional experience

  • Experience in operating and analyzing X‑ray photoelectron spectroscopy data of battery interfaces.
