The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and thus of the ETH Domain. WSL focuses on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards. WSL employs approximately 600 people, of whom 180 work at SLF in Davos.

Head of Research Unit Snow Avalanches and Prevention 100% (f/m/d)

The research unit Snow Avalanches and Prevention investigates the formation and dynamics of avalanches. The aim is to gain a deeper understanding of the release, flow behavior and impact of avalanches to improve avalanche forecasting, protection and risk management. The research unit is responsible for the avalanche warning in Switzerland. We are looking for a qualified candidate.

As an internationally recognized personality in research, you will lead the research unit with around 50 employees together with the group leaders. Your diverse area of expertise includes research coordination and development across the unit. You are committed to the targeted implementation of scientific results in practice and in avalanche warning. You are also responsible for acquiring third-party funding for research projects and for cooperation with authorities and organizations at the national and international level. You will cooperate in the further thematic development of SLF.

You are at an advanced stage in your scientific career, have many years of research experience and an excellent scientific track record in the field of avalanche research and its application for avalanche prevention. You have several years of experience in leading research groups and managing interdisciplinary research projects. In addition, you are an integrative personality with strong negotiation skills and are fluent in at least one of Switzerland’s national languages as well as written and spoken English.
