Overview

A nationally recognized leader in civil infrastructure is seeking a Heavy Highway Concrete Estimator with expertise in concrete operations within transportation infrastructure projects. This professional will develop accurate, timely estimates and competitive bid packages for municipal and state-level heavy highway concrete scopes. The role is based in Hoffman Estates, IL.

What you'll do

  • Analyze technical documentation including blueprints and specs to produce comprehensive quantity takeoffs for sidewalks, curbs, flatwork, and full-depth paving
  • Lead cost estimating for concrete-related scopes on large-scale DOT, tollway, and municipal roadway jobs
  • Collaborate with construction and engineering teams to clarify project scopes and integrate operational insights
  • Generate labor, equipment, and material cost breakdowns using advanced estimating software
  • Coordinate with vendors and subcontractors to obtain accurate and timely quotations
  • Participate in pre-bid walkthroughs and site evaluations to assess risk factors and validate assumptions
  • Present well-structured bid proposals on bid day with proper documentation of assumptions and contingencies
  • Track awarded jobs for performance evaluation and assist with process improvement
  • Ensure bid deadlines are never missed—100% submission compliance is expected
  • Oversee subcontractor commitment to project timelines and scope coverage prior to contract issuance
  • Issue subcontracts post-award in alignment with bid scope and project goals

What you'll need

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management, or 8–12 years of equivalent field experience in highway or airport concrete construction
  • Proven expertise in highway concrete estimation with IDOT, tollway, or city agency experience preferred
  • Strong command of concrete paving best practices, mix design requirements, and site preparation standards
  • Proficiency in HCSS Heavy Bid, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Carlson, Viewpoint, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple estimates under pressure and manage bid day logistics
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with IDOT and ISTHA bid preparation processes and technical standards
  • Experience in reviewing contracts, technical specs, and vendor pricing for scope coverage and accuracy
  • Certifications such as Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) a plus
  • Self-starter with excellent time-management, negotiation, and leadership capabilities
  • Primarily office-based role with occasional travel to job sites for walkthroughs and evaluations
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, collaborative estimating department with strict bid deadlines and high-volume project schedules
