About the Role
Nature Genetics is looking for an Associate or Senior Editor to join the editorial team.
Members of the editorial team participate in all aspects of the editorial process including manuscript selection and managing the peer review process, commissioning and editing front-half pieces (e.g. News & Views, Comments, etc.), and writing for the journal (e.g. Research Highlights and Editorials). Nature Genetics editors also organize and attend conferences, visit laboratories, and maintain close contact with the international scientific community.
You will have a broad interest in science, excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills, and the ability to critically evaluate research submitted to the broad biological areas covered by the journal. You will be fluent in spoken and written English, with an eagerness to learn new fields and engage with the scientific community.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in genetics, genomics or a related area of biomedical research, and ideally some postdoctoral experience. Candidates with expertise in bioinformatics are particularly encouraged to apply. Full training is given, but candidates with editorial experience may be considered for a Senior Editor position.
Role Responsibilities:
Manuscripts
- Selecting and rejecting manuscripts for publication, within the framework of current editorial policy.
- Covering for absent colleagues or lack of special knowledge in the editorial team.
- Where agreed, allocating manuscripts to other team members.
- Establishing Nature Genetics reputation in the scientific community by fostering good relationships with researchers.
- Where agreed, taking responsibility for the development of a broad subject area.
- Where agreed, defining topics for Perspective and Review Articles, assessing proposals from potential authors of such articles, handling the resulting manuscripts and improving them via effective editing.
Training and development
- Helping other members of the team in handling manuscripts, and participating generally in the training and evolution of the team.
- Where required, training and supervision of new editors in their probationary period, including recommending to the Chief Editor whether the probationary period has been successfully completed. (Senior Editor)
- Where agreed, taking responsibility for the broad progress of aspects of training and personal development within the team. (Senior Editor)
- Active participation in planning an effective publishing strategy for authors; where agreed, taking responsibility for the journal’s input into technological and operational developments.
Relationships with other departments
- Developing and maintaining effective and productive relations with other members of staff, including other Nature journal editors, editorial assistants, and other relevant departments, such as Author Services.
- Coordinating and collaborating with commercial colleagues, including advice to marketing and advertising departments and making constructive suggestions for sponsored projects.
Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
- PhD – Postdoctoral experience preferred but not required.
- Ability to grasp the essence of a manuscript quickly and accurately.
- Ability to select reviewers for and reach decisions on manuscripts quickly and effectively.
- Ability to work in a team.
- Ability to recognize useful leads for front half sections of Nature Genetics.
- A thorough understanding and overview of their own area, and the potential to have the same appreciation of other areas.
For Senior Editor, must have significant experience as Associate Editor handling manuscripts for Nature Research (or similar experience elsewhere).
To apply:
- Please submit a CV and cover letter explaining your interest in the position and your salary expectations.
- A concise (700-1000 words) discussion of recently published scientific developments, which you have found particularly exciting. This discussion should be in the style of Nature Genetics News & Views articles, but should not be about a Nature Genetics paper.
