IceCube is the world’s largest and most sensitive neutrino telescope, located at South Pole Station in Antarctica. DESY hosts one of the largest IceCube groups worldwide, contributing to the construction and operation of the instrument. Our science activities focus on neutrino astronomy and the studies of fundamental properties of neutrinos with IceCube. The group also plays a key role for the IceCube Upgrade, an extension of the IceCube detector with new optical sensors and calibration devices, with deployment scheduled in late 2025. The IceCube group is part of DESY’s astroparticle division focused on multi-messenger astronomy with a network of groups that connect neutrino astronomy to optical/UV and gamma-ray astronomy, as well as theoretical modelling of high-energy phenomena. We are currently searching for multiple Ph.D. students, who perform research in the fields of neutrino physics or neutrino astronomy.

About your role:

  • Independent research in neutrino astronomy and/or neutrino physics
  • Analysis of IceCube data
  • Commissioning of the IceCube Upgrade sensors / calibration devices
  • Analysis of calibration data from the IceCube Upgrade
  • Publication of achieved scientific and technical results

About you:

  • Master’s degree in physics or astronomy, or equivalent qualification
  • Strong interest in neutrino astronomy and/or neutrino physics
  • Familiarity with scientific computing and modern programming languages, e.g. C++, Python
  • Proficiency in the English language, both verbally and in writing
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in teams

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%).
