About The Role

As a Senior Backend Developer PHP/Symfony, you will help evolve the backend of a high-volume e-commerce platform. You will work in a backend team of four developers and collaborate closely with the Shop Team Lead, Product Owners, and colleagues across the business. You will take ownership beyond feature delivery, contributing to architecture, technical standards, and code quality.

PHP and Symfony are at the heart of your work, while AI is an increasingly important part of how you approach modern software engineering. You will use AI coding assistants thoughtfully, help establish effective AI-supported development practices, and explore applications of AI within our shop. Your goal will be to turn promising ideas into stable, maintainable, and commercially valuable solutions.

Qualifications

You bring at least five years of backend development experience with modern PHP and Symfony, alongside a strong understanding of software architecture. This may include domain‑driven design, modular monoliths, microservices, or event‑driven architecture. You have solid experience with MySQL, performance optimization, caching, and queueing, and you have hands‑on experience using AI coding assistants or coding agents.

You can assess technical options not only for elegance, but also for their practical and commercial value. You communicate confidently in German and have good English skills. Experience with e‑commerce systems or integrations involving ERP, payment, and logistics platforms is an advantage. Knowledge of LLM APIs, retrieval‑augmented generation, embeddings, vector databases, or agentic workflows is also welcome, as is experience mentoring or supporting other developers.

Responsibilities

You will develop and improve our backend architecture using PHP 8.x and Symfony, making informed decisions about scalability, maintainability, and performance. You will design and deliver complex e‑commerce capabilities across areas such as checkout, pricing, product assortment, search, and fulfillment. To maintain high standards, you will contribute to clean code practices, automated testing, code reviews, and CI/CD.

You will use tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot for development, refactoring, testing, and documentation, while carefully reviewing AI-generated code. Together with the team, you will establish standards for AI-supported workflows and identify useful AI applications, including intelligent search, product data enrichment, recommendations, and process automation. You will translate business goals into technical solutions, keeping measures such as conversion, average basket value, margin, and process costs in view. You will also share your knowledge and act as a technical sparring partner for developers, Product Owners, and business teams.

Our technology environment includes PHP 8.x, Symfony, MySQL, Redis, RabbitMQ, Git, CI/CD, and on‑premise hosting. Jira and Confluence support our planning and collaboration.
