The University of Vienna invites applications for a post‑doctoral position within the Faculty of Psychology, focusing on the project “MemoryLane – A Road to Remember: Neural Plasticity through the Lens of Gut‑Brain Interactions”. The position starts on 1November2026, is full‑time, and is a two‑year contract with a possibility for extension, classified under §48VwGr.B1 lit.b. Project Summary
This ERC Starting Grant explores how gut microbes influence hippocampal plasticity, learning, memory, and related behaviours in humans. Work involves neuroimaging, microbial profiling, and cognitive‑behavioural assessments, with a special focus on individuals at genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Key Responsibilities
Analyze existing human gut microbial datasets, including 16S and metagenomic data, and correlate them with neuroimaging and behavioural outputs. Perform network‑based analysis of fMRI data to investigate hippocampal connectivity and function. Integrate multifaceted datasets to derive meaningful biological interpretations. Design and conduct novel data collection on probiotic intervention in participants with reduced neural plasticity due to genetic predisposition for Alzheimer’s disease. Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team and engage with core facilities such as the Joint Microbiome Facility and the Medical University of Vienna. Qualifications
PhD in microbiology, biological sciences, or a related field. Background in microbial ecology and/or microbiome‑brain interactions, including experimental work. Strong understanding of gut microbiota and neurophysiology; experience with both preferred. Excellent bioinformatics and statistical analysis skills, with working knowledge of R and other programming languages. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a diverse research environment. In an ideal world, candidate would have experience in microbiome‑brain interaction studies and neuroimaging.
