We are looking for a Tools and Infrastructure Support Engineer to keep EUMETSAT's DevOps tooling platform — GitLab, Jenkins, Nexus, Harbor, Subversion, Orcharhino and Device42 — secure, current and available, both for the Build and Deployment team and for the wider organisation it serves.

Background

The Computer and Systems Management (CSM) competence area, part of the Infrastructures for IT and Data Division (I2D) at EUMETSAT, provides all levels of system and software builds and deployments for the operational ground-segment infrastructure, alongside computing platforms, data storage and distribution, network services and infrastructure security for multi-mission environments.

You will join the Build and Deployment Service Team within CSM, which covers routine builds, packaging and deployments, engineering and coordination for incoming projects, and the maintenance of the platform tooling landscape. Growing volumes of vendor deliveries have made standardised, automated and best-practice workflows central to the team's role.

You shall support

  • Take full and proactive responsibility for managing and monitoring the infrastructure tool landscape, covering existing tools and new tools procured in future
  • Administer multiple self-hosted GitLab instances (premium and free tiers), Jenkins, Nexus and Harbor build and artefact management tools, Subversion, the Orcharhino provisioning and package repository tool, and the Device42 IT inventory tool
  • Keep the tools up to date by installing feature and security updates, and manage their configuration and reported issues
  • Liaise with vendors to support updates and security fixes, and raise and follow up support cases through to closure
  • Perform housekeeping and performance and availability monitoring across the platform, including backups and restore verification
  • Support users of the platform tools, resolving access issues and contributing to the service knowledge base

Skills and experiences

  • Profound advanced Linux system administration skills: software installations, backups, filesystems, performance monitoring and troubleshooting
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes and high-availability setups
  • Strong scripting and automation skills: Python, Bash/Shell and API-based automation
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining tools in the DevOps landscape: GitLab (software version control and CI/CD)
  • Orcharhino, or comparable OS provisioning tooling such as Red Hat Satellite or Foreman
  • Jenkins, Nexus and Harbor software build and artefact management tools
  • Subversion and other version control systems
  • Device42 or comparable IT inventory tooling
  • Customer-oriented attitude with good communication skills
  • Sound understanding of networking and TCP/IP services, and of change management processes
  • Good knowledge and experience in security: hardening techniques, secure architecture and protocols, patching and vulnerability management
  • Experience in a large-scale operational or production environment with high-availability (24x7) requirements
  • University degree (Master's or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, or equivalent proven experience, with at least 5 years of relevant experience
  • Strong technical documentation skills and effective written and verbal communication in English

General Work Skills

  • Problem solving
  • Good analytical skills
  • High degree of interpersonal awareness
  • Experience in working as part of a multicultural team
  • Ability to work autonomously and to perform regular, e.g. weekly, context switch

Working Location

This is a full-time position, in Darmstadt, Germany starting from November 2026. Around 25% of the work is provided on-site at EUMETSAT's premises in Darmstadt. Occasional weekend, public-holiday or early-morning/late-night work may be required, always agreed in advance.
