Your mission is inspiring: Dependable and trustworthy AI will be essential for future aircraft design. AI systems must be accurate, efficient, safe, reliable, ethical, and transparent. They must meet the highest quality and certification standards, and respect human dignity and autonomy. Dependable and trustworthy AI can improve aviation processes and their resilience, reduce errors and risks, and boost customer satisfaction and trust. As a PhD Candidate in AI/ML for Airframe Engineering, you will develop and evaluate dependable and trustworthy AI solutions for aviation, following EASA and other authorities‘ guidelines and best practices. You will also work with other experts and researchers in dependable and trustworthy AI, and share your results and suggestions with the Airframe community and beyond.
You are a person who is curious about new technologies and wants to apply them to the aviation industry. You collect information from various sources and are able to communicate it clearly to the Airframe community. You will join an international and diverse team of competent data scientists, software developers, product managers and engineers. You work, learn and grow in an environment of creativity and collaboration. You also establish a network with other researchers and practitioners in the same field, both within and outside the company, to exchange ideas and insights.

Your location
You will be working at the largest production site for civil aircraft situated in Hamburg. Its location on the southern banks of the river Elbe includes the option to commute by ferry. Experience the special flair of Hamburg in your spare time where vibrant cosmopolitan culture meets nautic legacy.

Your tasks and responsibilities
- Conduct literature reviews and state-of-the-art surveys on dependable and trustworthy AI methods and applications
- Develop and implement novel AI/ML algorithms and models that meet safety, reliability, ethics, and transparency requirements
- Evaluate and validate the performance and robustness of the proposed AI/ML solutions using real-world data and scenarios
- Publish and present the research outcomes in high-quality journals and conferences
- Stay up to date on the latest developments in IT, Data Analysis & Data Science
Desired skills and qualifications
- A master’s degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related field, with a background in AI/ML and an interest in aviation
- Experience in developing and applying AI/ML techniques and tools, such as Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, etc.
- Knowledge of the principles and standards of dependable and trustworthy AI, such as EASA’s AI Roadmap and the EU’s Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI
- Ability to conduct independent and original research, as well as work effectively in a team.
- Excellent communication and writing skills in English.
