What To Expect
The Role: Tesla is seeking a Controls Engineer on the Cell Controls Engineering (CCE) team to be part of a world-class team responsible for designing and building automation and robotic equipment at Tesla factories. As a Controls Engineer, you will implement equipment controls solutions for all Cell Manufacturing projects, including automated storage systems, robotics, conveyance systems, automated guided vehicles, fixtures, etc. You will own hardware programming, robot programming, commissioning, and review processes, along with auditing, installation, and safety assessments.
The key objective of the Automation team is to develop innovative solutions in the factory to help Tesla achieve its manufacturing goals. All automated processes will be planned, assembled, and tested at Tesla facilities in Berlin, Germany.
What You\’ll Do
- Program and debug structure text and ladder logic code for Beckhoff PLC controllers.
- Develop organized, structured, documented, maintainable, and reusable code.
- Create robust programs for controlling complex machinery for processes like material handling, dispensing, fastening, welding, testing, and transport.
- Use Python scripting and SQL for interfacing equipment with Tesla\’s Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and data collection.
- Create operator touchscreen interfaces using TwinCAT HMI/WinCC and SCADA dashboards with Ignition.
- Set up and tune servo drives and VFDs (Beckhoff, Siemens, SEW).
- Design and implement safety systems in compliance with German standards (DIN, VDE).
- Participate in conceptual development, balancing specifications, process requirements, layout, cost, and lead-time.
- Manage supplier relationships during specification, review, approval, and installation phases.
- Introduce automation into production and train teams for ongoing support.
- Establish and execute test plans.
What You\’ll Bring
- Deep knowledge of Beckhoff controls systems.
- Proficiency in Structured Text (IEC 61131-3) programming.
- Ability to use hand tools and diagnostic instruments.
- Understanding of field network topology and practical applications.
- Excellent German and English communication skills.
- Ability to multitask and work under pressure.
- Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics Engineering, or Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 2 years of relevant professional experience in Controls Engineering.
Nice to Have
- Experience with production machinery, sensors, and controllers.
- Knowledge of databases and programming languages like Java and Python.
- Experience with HMI programming (TwinCAT HMI, WinCC, Ignition).
- Robotic programming skills.
- Controls panel electrical design experience.
