The Payloads Organization within Boeing Commercial Airplanes is seeking an experienced Lighting Design Engineer (Senior) (M F D) to join the design center team in Hamburg, Germany.

The Payloads Organization is responsible for the interior of the airplane, including passenger cabins, cargo compartments, exterior markings, associated systems, and cabin safety. We aim to help our airline customers fulfill their missions, represent their brands, and shape the public\’s experience of flight.

The Role :

The lighting system includes General Lighting, Lighting Scene Development, Emergency Lighting, and Passenger Information Signs. Technical considerations involve key technology performance indicators, physical/mechanical packaging & integration, electrical design, system interfaces & communication protocols, optical system performance (e.g., interactions with materials, near-field lighting effects, lens design), and the human visual system.

The lighting team collaborates closely with Cabin Systems, Electrical Sub-Systems, Supplier Management, Regulatory Administration, and other Boeing teams. As a Lighting Design Engineer (Senior) (M F D), you will provide technical leadership, communication, and project management, responsible for design requirements integration and installation support into the final aircraft product.

The successful candidate will work across the product lifecycle, from initial technical definition and feasibility studies to configuration development, risk management, interface resolution, validation, verification, and regulatory compliance demonstration.

Position Responsibilities :

  • Develop, integrate, and document system architecture and requirements to establish design criteria.
  • Perform analysis and testing to validate and verify system compliance with requirements.
  • Design and modify interior lighting systems using 3D CAD, optical modeling, and simulation tools, providing product definitions to engineering, production, and suppliers throughout the lifecycle.
  • Create new processes and tools to improve development effectiveness, quality, and efficiency.
  • Manage supplier activities related to design, development, testing, and production, ensuring alignment with program goals.
  • Review supplier data for compliance with Boeing and customer requirements.
  • Monitor regulatory changes affecting aircraft lighting and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Investigate emerging lighting technologies for future product concepts.
  • Occasional travel to supplier or customer facilities may be required.

This position is hybrid; the candidate will perform some work onsite at one of the specified locations, at the discretion of the hiring team, with potential future changes.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills / Experience) :

  • Bachelor\’s degree in engineering or physics from an accredited institution.
  • Experience leading cross-functional or integrated product teams.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills / Experience) :

  • 9+ years in engineering, including design integration and certification, or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing principles and electronics manufacturing methods.
  • Experience with aerospace interior lighting, materials, design, and certification processes.
  • Knowledge of optics, lighting system design, and simulation tools like SPEOS, ASAP, LightTools.
  • Experience with component obsolescence management and legacy product qualification.
  • 9+ years in program or project management, handling proposals, schedules, budgets, risks, and issues.
  • Understanding of program management best practices.
  • Experience working with aerospace suppliers, airlines, or regulators.
  • Supporting qualification and certification of aerospace products, with knowledge of FAA and EASA regulations.
  • Experience in systems engineering, functional architecture, validation, verification, and safety assessments.
