Your team:

You will be part of the Directorate Banknotes, which has 76 members of staff dedicated to safeguarding the integrity of euro banknotes against counterfeiting. We coordinate banknote development and production activities across the Eurosystem and with third parties.

As a trainee in the New Banknotes team, which consists of nine staff members, you will be involved in the design and development of euro banknotes, covering all technological aspects in collaboration with the Research and Development team and the Directorate’s Anti Counterfeiting Section.

The ECB is an inclusive employer, and we encourage applications from individuals of all backgrounds.

Your role:

  • Contribute to the design, execution, and monitoring of testing procedures for new banknotes, assessing their perceptual impact, ease of use, and overall resilience to counterfeiting.
  • Participate in monitoring testing activities (such as laboratory tests and on-site production trials) to establish specific banknote parameters.
  • Help assess tools and procedures for measuring the behavioural, visual, and haptic properties of banknotes.

This position offers excellent opportunities to work closely with experts in banknote development, research, communication, and counterfeiting in a multicultural team striving for continuous innovation.

Qualifications, experience and skills:

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in cognitive psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, neuromarketing, or a related field.
  • A good knowledge of the MS Office package.
  • A master’s degree in cognitive psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience, neuromarketing, or a related field is preferred.
  • A good understanding of statistical methods for quality control and measurement systems.
  • The ability to stay updated with new technological developments by monitoring scientific publications and other information sources.

You should be curious, eager to learn, and motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission of serving EU citizens as part of a public institution.

Further information:

The traineeship lasts between 3 and 6 months, with a possible extension up to 12 months.

The recruitment process includes a remote written exercise in the pre-selection phase and, if selected, an online interview.

More information on how to apply is available on our website.

If not selected, you may be placed on a reserve list for 12 months for other traineeship positions within the ECB.
