Head of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Location: Berlin, Germany Employment type: Full-time Reporting to: Chief Executive Officer / Managing Director About the role We are looking for an experienced and commercially minded Head of BESS to lead our battery energy storage activities in Germany and wider European markets. Based in Berlin, you will own the BESS strategy and project portfolio from origination and investment case development through engineering, construction, commissioning and operations. You will build and lead a multidisciplinary team while working closely with utilities, grid operators, landowners, technology providers, investors and regulatory authorities. This is a senior leadership position for someone who combines deep energy-storage expertise with strong commercial judgement and a track record of delivering utility-scale infrastructure. Key responsibilities Strategy and leadership Develop and execute the company’s BESS strategy for Germany and selected European markets. Build, manage and mentor a high-performing team across development, engineering, commercial optimisation and operations. Establish portfolio priorities, budgets, performance targets and governance processes. Advise the executive team and board on market developments, investment opportunities and portfolio risks. Represent the company with industry bodies, partners, investors and public stakeholders. Project development Lead the identification, evaluation and origination of greenfield, co-located and acquisition opportunities. Oversee site selection, land agreements, grid applications, permitting and stakeholder engagement. Manage projects through feasibility, development, financial investment decision and notice to proceed. Maintain development schedules, budgets, risk registers and stage-gate approvals. Build strong relationships with German transmission and distribution system operators. Commercial and investment management Develop robust investment cases and financial models for BESS projects. Assess revenue opportunities across wholesale trading, balancing services, capacity mechanisms, congestion management and contracted structures. Lead commercial negotiations with optimisers, route-to-market providers, aggregators, lenders and investment partners. Support project financing, due diligence, acquisitions and joint ventures. Monitor regulatory and market-design changes affecting storage economics. Engineering and delivery Define the technical strategy and design standards for the BESS portfolio. Oversee technology selection and procurement, including batteries, inverters, energy-management systems and balance-of-plant equipment. Lead EPC, equipment-supply and long-term service agreement negotiations. Ensure projects meet applicable German and European grid, safety, environmental and cybersecurity requirements. Oversee construction, commissioning, handover and warranty management. Embed strong health, safety, quality and environmental practices throughout the project lifecycle. Operations and optimisation Establish the operating model for commissioned assets. Monitor availability, degradation, efficiency, safety and commercial performance. Work with trading and optimisation partners to maximise risk-adjusted portfolio revenue. Develop asset-management, maintenance and incident-response processes. Use operational data and lessons learned to improve future project design and contracting. Candidate profile Essential experience Significant experience in battery storage, renewable energy, power markets or related energy infrastructure. Proven responsibility for utility-scale BESS projects through multiple stages of the project lifecycle. Strong knowledge of the German electricity market, grid-connection process and relevant regulatory environment. Demonstrable experience developing investment cases and evaluating project economics. Experience negotiating material commercial and technical contracts. Strong understanding of battery technology, degradation, warranties, safety and system integration. Experience managing teams, budgets, external advisers and senior stakeholders. Professional fluency in English and German. Willingness to travel within Germany and occasionally elsewhere in Europe. Desirable experience A portfolio track record covering several hundred megawatts of storage projects. Experience with project finance, mergers and acquisitions or infrastructure investment. Knowledge of hybrid renewable-plus-storage projects. Experience working with energy trading, optimisation or ancillary-service markets. An established network across the German energy and infrastructure sectors. A degree in engineering, energy, finance, economics or a related discipline. What success looks like During your first 12 months, you will: Establish a clear BESS strategy, operating model and delivery roadmap. Build and develop the core BESS team. Strengthen and prioritise the project pipeline. Advance selected projects toward investment decision and construction. Create scalable technical, commercial and governance standards.
