Job Description:
Software AG serves customers worldwide, including large enterprises and government organizations, with business-critical enterprise applications based on IBM z/OS COBOL. The goal is to modernize these systems for future readiness and cost efficiency.
We plan to launch a new product to modernize COBOL z/OS applications using Java technologies on z/OS.
We seek an experienced Product Manager* COBOL Mainframe Modernization to lead product strategy and market adoption.
This role demands technical credibility, a customer-centric approach, and thought leadership.
Essential Functions
- Support global customers in IBM z/OS COBOL modernization projects using Java technologies, collaborating with presales, professional services, and partners.
- Assist in Proof of Concepts (PoC) to demonstrate product capabilities and value.
- Diagnose complex customer issues and propose technical solutions.
- Gather and prioritize customer requirements into feature backlogs.
- Enhance demo environments to showcase product features.
- Create marketing content and raise awareness via webinars, events, social media, blogs, and user groups, working with product marketing. Be a credible thought leader in the IBM Z community.
- Enable internal teams such as presales, professional services, and support.
- Collaborate with cross-functional, international teams to shape product strategy and roadmap.
- Monitor market trends and competitive landscape relevant to mainframe modernization.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor\’s degree in computer science, IT, or related field; advanced degrees or certifications (e.g., IBM, Interskill) are a plus.
- Extensive experience in architecting, developing, and modernizing large-scale COBOL z/OS applications.
- Proven expertise with mainframe databases (Db2, VSAM, IMS, Adabas), transaction monitors (CICS), batch processing (JCL, job scheduling, Sort, Files), development tools, COBOL debugging, and source code management on z/OS.
- Experience with z/OS middleware (MQ, CTG, z/OS Connect) and IMS is advantageous.
- Several years developing full-stack Java enterprise applications on IBM z/OS, focusing on databases, performance, automation, and troubleshooting.
- Understanding of IBM mainframe software licensing models.
- Ability to work in an agile environment.
- Excellent communication skills in English, capable of conveying technical concepts to varied audiences.
- Customer-focused, with proven collaboration skills.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Self-motivated with a results-driven attitude.
- Experience mentoring stakeholders.
- Willingness for occasional international travel (<20%).
